Introduction

Many drone pilots lose money without realising it. The flying is fine and clients like the images, but the rate was copied from a competitor, the quote misses half of the mandatory details, the terms of service were lifted from a site in another trade, and the rights clause reads, in full, "rights assigned". The day a client pays three months late, cancels the evening before because of rain, or reuses the images in a national poster campaign, the pilot finds there is nothing in writing to rely on.

This guide is the business kit that sits between pilot training and the first invoice, written for the French legal system. It follows the real order of a business: choosing a status, sorting out operator obligations, calculating your rate from your costs (with a fully worked example built on stated assumptions), turning it into packages, writing quotes and invoices that meet French rules, drafting terms of service for business clients and for consumers, assigning copyright in writing, handling image rights, privacy, GDPR and no-capture zones, then chasing and recovering unpaid invoices. It ends with frequent mistakes and eight ready-to-copy templates with fields in [brackets]. French terms are kept where you will meet them (devis for quote, CGV for terms of sale, micro-entreprise, SIREN).

The guide is up to date as of 31 October 2026. The articles cited were checked on that date on Légifrance, the official French legal database, or on the official factsheets of entreprendre.service-public.fr, whose own verification date is given. Tax and social thresholds change: recheck them at the source every year.

Order matters: status and SIREN number, operator compliance and insurance, hourly cost calculated, package grid, dated terms; then, for each job, a brief with the exact address (to check airspace on Géoportail), a quote with terms and rights, signature and deposit before any paperwork, the job and a delivery form, and the invoice the same day.

What a business client checks first

A professional buyer compares quotes and discards those that do not let them cover themselves: UAS operator number, current insurance certificate, regulatory framework planned for the job, deliverables described (format, quantity, timing), scope of rights assigned, weather postponement terms. The free guide on choosing a professional drone pilot shows what clients check; this guide helps you give it to them.

Checklist before sending your first quote

  • My business is registered and I have a SIREN number
  • I know my VAT position (franchise or VAT charged) and the wording that goes with it
  • I am registered as an operator and know which framework applies to this job
  • I hold a liability insurance certificate covering professional use of my drones
  • I have calculated my hourly cost rather than guessed it
  • My terms of service are written, dated and attached to the quote
  • My quote says what the client may do with the images, where and for how long
  • I know what happens if it rains, if the client cancels or if the authorisation does not arrive
