Amusement ride and fairground attraction drone inspection: method, price
A big wheel erected for three weeks on a town-centre square, a drop tower permanently installed in a leisure park, a roller coaster wrapped under tarpaulins all winter: in all three cases, the steel structure carrying the public is subject to a mandatory periodic technical inspection, entrusted to a body approved by the French State. But between two visits from that body, who looks at the state of the welds forty metres up a mast, the early corrosion on a lattice beam exposed to sea spray at a seaside funfair, or the tightness of a bolted joint after winter storage? Traditional access — articulated platform, mobile crane, rope-access technician — requires a stabilised site and a budget few touring operators can mobilise outside the statutory check. The drone does not replace the approved body, but it makes possible what nobody was doing: a close, regular and documented look at the structure, between two deadlines. Here is the method, the flight framework and the prices observed in 2026.

A mandatory check, access that stays acrobatic
Since law no. 2008-136 of 13 February 2008 and the order of 12 March 2009 on the procedures for safety inspection of fairground rides, machines and installations, all equipment — touring or fixed — is subject to a periodic technical inspection (the well-known COTIP) carried out by an approved body, alongside the daily checks the operator runs before each opening to the public. The European standard EN 13814 governs in parallel the design and calculation of these structures, built to absorb dynamic loads and erection-dismantling cycles that few other structures endure.
This framework is solid, but it leaves a blind spot: between two visits from the approved body, the operator is left alone with the structure. Climbing to the top of a big wheel's mast or inspecting the underside of a roller-coaster rail requires an articulated platform or a crane, stable ground to set them up on, and taking the ride out of service in peak season — three constraints that discourage interim monitoring, especially for touring operators whose equipment moves to a new site every week.
What a drone flight documents on the structure
The flight methodically follows the sensitive points: welded joints at mast and lattice-beam junctions, bolted flanges and anchor plates, paint condition and early corrosion — scrutinised with particular care at seaside funfairs, where salt speeds everything up —, load-bearing cables of big-wheel gondolas, chains on chair-swing rides, and the rails and guide structures of roller coasters. The camera zooms in on every point without a technician having to hang off it.
A review by Sattar Dorafshan, Robert J. Thomas and Marc Maguire, published in 2018 in the Journal of Bridge Engineering, established the feasibility of detecting fatigue cracks on steel structures by drone, measuring the useful detection distance under different lighting and testing flight stability in windy, GPS-denied environments (see the study on Google Scholar). The railway bridges it targets share with a big wheel's mast or a roller coaster's structure the same stakes: metal joints under repeated load cycles, where a fatigue crack starts invisible to the naked eye before it can be seen. It is the same lens we describe for bridges and tall industrial structures, applied here to structures that directly carry a moving public.
A complement to the approved body, not a substitute
It is worth being clear about what a drone does not do: it issues no regulatory report, replaces neither the approved body's periodic technical inspection nor the operator's daily checks, and performs no contact-based non-destructive testing — dye penetrant, ultrasound — reserved for certified technicians. Its value lies elsewhere: spotting, between two deadlines, what deserves to be shown to the approved body or handled first by in-house maintenance — a spreading patch of rust, a bolt that looks loose, an impact mark after transport.
Three moments suit it particularly well: coming out of winter storage, when the equipment has spent months under tarpaulins and a condition survey before reassembly reassures both the operator and the insurer; after a weather incident — storm, hail — on a fixed theme-park ride; and for touring operators, before a busy season, a quick pass over the fleet's main rides, in the same spirit as the monitoring we describe for roofs after a storm.
Flight framework: closed park, no public
The first constraint is not the structure, it is the public: overflying gathered people is strictly regulated, and an operating funfair or theme park is the textbook case. The mission is therefore scheduled outside opening hours — early morning, evening after closing, or during winter storage — following the rules detailed in our overflying people and private property guide. In a town centre, the specific category in built-up areas framework also applies (European STS-01/STS-02 scenarios, the only ones active since the French national S1-S4 scenarios ended on 1 January 2026); in an isolated leisure park, the flight most often falls under the open category.
Images stay framed on the structure: no identifiable visitors, no staff filmed without need, following the principles recalled in our GDPR and professional drones guide. For a permanent park, the mission is coordinated with the technical manager and fits into the existing maintenance programme; for a touring operator, it is timed to erection or dismantling days, when the site is already closed to the public.
Prices observed in 2026
Ranges observed in 2026 (excl. VAT):
- Visual inspection of one ride (main structure, located photo report): €400 to €900.
- Tall ride (big wheel, drop tower, roller coaster: mast, beams, cables and rails): €900 to €1,800.
- Full-park winter-storage check (several rides, pooled tour): €250 to €500 per ride depending on count and site spread.
- Post-weather-incident pass (dated report for the insurer): €350 to €700.
The public-free slot (early morning, evening, winter storage) is included in the price; it carries no night surcharge unless the flight happens after strict nightfall.
