Finding an Asian hornet nest with a drone: method, regulations and price

An Asian hornet nest is often built 15, 20, sometimes 30 metres up, deep in a tree canopy or pressed against a trunk, invisible from the garden or the street below. Yet the earlier a nest is spotted in the season, the simpler its destruction and the smaller its impact on nearby honeybee colonies. Between binoculars from the ground and blind climbing, a good share of nests simply stay out of sight until the leaves fall — by which point the nest may already be abandoned. Drones, especially fitted with a thermal camera, change the picture for this one step: pinpointing the location precisely, before handing it to a pest-control company for destruction. Here is how this detection works, what it does not replace, and what it costs in 2026.

Why a nest so often stays invisible from the ground

The Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) builds a small, often low and discreet primary nest in spring (a garden shed, a hedge), then founds a much larger secondary nest in summer, frequently high in a tree crown — oak, poplar, cedar — well beyond the reach of a decent pair of binoculars from a neighbouring garden. The grey shape and dense foliage of a large tree make for formidable camouflage: a nest the size of a basketball can all but disappear into a tree crown seen from a distance or against the light.

The traditional method — spotting worker traffic by eye, or tracking their flight path back from a ground-level bait point — takes time, good visibility and plenty of patience, with a success rate that drops sharply once the nest is far away or hidden behind an obstacle. Across a large property, a public park or a stretch of hedgerow, systematically scanning every tree with binoculars simply is not realistic for a local authority or a homeowner.

How the thermal drone picks up the nest's signature

An active nest houses several hundred, sometimes several thousand individuals by late season, in constant activity: that mass produces heat that stands out clearly from the surrounding vegetation on a thermal camera, even through sparse foliage that would hide the nest from normal vision. The pilot flies a grid pattern at constant altitude over the suspected area, each strip scanned with no blind spots, with a visible-light camera always paired with the thermal one to confirm that a hot spot really is nest-shaped rather than some other heat source (a chimney, an electricity meter, a bird's nest).

A second approach complements the first: spotting from the ground the flight direction workers take when leaving a bait point, then launching the drone along that line to visually track them back to the nest. The best window is late summer into autumn, when the colony reaches peak activity and the still-bustling nest gives the sharpest thermal contrast before the first frosts; once the leaves have fallen, spotting becomes possible again by eye or standard visual flight, but the nest has often already entered its seasonal decline.

Detection and destruction: two separate trades

One point is worth clarifying before making contact: drone detection and nest destruction are two different services, carried out by different professionals. The pilot who locates the nest does not inject it with insecticide: that step falls to a certified pest-control company, which depending on height and access uses a telescopic pole, a dedicated injection drone (a specific aircraft, distinct from the photo/video detection drone) or, more rarely, a tree climber. Many town halls and départemental Asian hornet control federations point homeowners toward exactly this split: report it, get it precisely located, then have it destroyed by a licensed operator.

Drone detection therefore has value of its own: it saves the pest-control company from burning valuable time searching for the nest itself — often billed on top of the intervention — and it documents the exact location (GPS coordinates, estimated height, orientation) handed straight to the professional who will act on it. What the rules say about this kind of flight

The spotting flight mostly falls under open-category sub-category A3: far from third parties, more than 150 m from residential areas if the flight is in a rural setting, with the operator registered on AlphaTango, under a 120 m ceiling. In built-up areas — a nest in a town centre or a public park is common enough — professional open-category flight over public space has been allowed in daytime since 1 January 2026 (order of 23 December 2025); depending on the configuration, a prior declaration to the préfecture with ten working days' notice may still be required, a lead time worth planning for as soon as the nest is reported rather than under time pressure.

The price mainly depends on the area to cover (an isolated garden, a large property, a municipal park) and the density of trees to inspect. Ranges observed in France in 2026:

This price covers the survey and a report with the nest's precise location, but never destruction or the insecticide itself: budget an extra €70 to €300 for a pest-control company's intervention, plus €80 to €150 above 10 m if an injection drone is needed. Many town halls cover all or part of that second cost as part of their Asian hornet control programme; check with your mairie before signing anything.

Frequently asked questions about drone hornet nest detection

Does the drone trigger an attack on the nest? No: the flight stays at a distance and in altitude, with no contact or vibration transmitted to whatever the nest is attached to. Workers carry on their activity normally during the pass.

Do you need to wait for the leaves to fall to spot a nest? Not with a thermal camera, which sees through sparse foliage; it is actually better to act earlier, in late summer, while the nest is still active and its impact on nearby honeybee colonies has not yet peaked.
