A fire brought under control within its first few minutes almost always stays a fire that never spreads. That is the whole point of a prevention patrol: spotting a smoke plume as early as possible, before it becomes visible from a watchtower or is reported by a hiker. A drone programmed to patrol a forest block on high-risk days complements traditional human surveillance. Here is how this prevention work is organised, distinct from a post-fire response, and what it costs.

How a prevention patrol is organised
The patrol follows a repeating route over a forest block or a risk area (a fringe close to housing, a busy roadside), with passes scheduled several times a day during periods classed as high risk — usually from midday to late afternoon, when heat and wind favour fire outbreaks. The onboard optical camera spots smoke plumes, supplemented on some equipment by AI-assisted detection that triggers an automatic alert as soon as a suspicious signal appears in the image.
As soon as a fire start is confirmed, the alert is relayed without delay to the departmental fire and rescue operations centre, with the precise geolocated position: it is those few minutes gained, even before the first resources arrive, that determine how large the fire is by the time it is tackled. The drone never intervenes on the fire itself — its role stops at detection and relaying the alert.
Regulations for a forest prevention patrol
The flight generally falls under the open category, sub-category A3 over an isolated forest block: 120 m maximum height, a remote pilot registered as an operator on AlphaTango. Near a fringe close to housing, the classification can shift to sub-category A2 depending on the distance actually kept from third parties.
The point of care specific to this use is coordination with aerial firefighting resources — water-bomber aircraft and helicopters — which can intervene without notice over the same sector if a fire is confirmed elsewhere: an immediate stand-down protocol for the drone must be agreed with the local fire and rescue service (SDIS) before any mission. As with any flight near a classified forest block, checking zones beforehand on the Géoportail map remains the first step, and an agreement with the national forestry office or the private forest owner is usually required before a patrol season starts.
