Drone in the Guérande salt marshes: regulations, mapping and price
Two thousand hectares of clay basins and seawater between Guérande, La Turballe, Le Croisic and Batz-sur-Mer: the Guérande salt marshes are one of the few French agricultural landscapes to combine Ramsar protection, a Natura 2000 site and a living economic activity — around 220 salt workers (paludiers) still harvest salt by hand there after twelve centuries, in a network of shallow pans (oeillets) and dikes that has barely changed since the Middle Ages. For a professional drone pilot, this territory raises a question that is both simple and unusual: where is flying allowed, and for which missions does a flight over such a closely watched site make sense? The answer comes in three parts — a strictly off-limits reserve, a Natura 2000 site that frames rather than bans, and genuine topography and monitoring needs for the salt workers' cooperatives and the area's local authorities.

A protected-name territory, between centuries-old heritage and double environmental protection
The Guérande peninsula makes salt on a principle unchanged since the Middle Ages: seawater moves by gravity through a network of successive basins — the vasière, the fares, the adernes — down to the oeillets, the last shallow pans where salt crystallises and the paludier harvests it by hand. Around 2,000 hectares are worked today by roughly 220 salt workers, organised in cooperatives (Le Guérandais, Les Salines de Guérande). "Sel de Guérande" earned the Label Rouge quality mark in 1991 and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status in 2012 — recognition that weighs directly on the product's value and on operators' interest in documenting and maintaining their working tool.
This productive landscape is also a bird sanctuary: the site has been listed as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar convention since 1 September 1995 ("Marais salants de Guérande et du Mès", over 5,000 hectares), and a large part of its area forms the Natura 2000 special protection area FR5210090 "Marais salants de Guérande, traicts du Croisic, dunes de Pen Bron", created on 27 October 2004 over 3,616 hectares. Two designations that coexist with the salt-making activity rather than excluding it — but which impose their own rules on any overflight.
Where flying is allowed — and where it isn't: the closed traicts du Croisic reserve
Natura 2000 designation does not in itself ban drone flight — that is the general rule detailed in our guide on the subject. But part of the site falls outside that flexibility: the traicts du Croisic, a semi-closed bay of 680 hectares of mudflats between Guérande, La Turballe, Le Croisic and Batz-sur-Mer, form a wildlife and hunting reserve (RCFS) whose rules, extended by inter-prefectoral order n° 2024/222 of 9 October 2024, leave no ambiguity: drone overflight is banned there year-round without the reserve manager's prior authorisation, and any overflight within 150 metres of its boundary is strictly prohibited. Physical access to the zone is also closed from 15 October to 15 March to preserve the peace of the tens of thousands of birds that winter there.
Outside that precise boundary, the rest of the Natura 2000 site — the working salt marshes themselves — falls under the ordinary rules for protected areas: no blanket ban, but a possible impact assessment for large projects and a duty not to intentionally disturb protected species. Dike and pan topography: the mission the cooperatives actually need
The salt marsh's hydraulic network relies entirely on a gravity-fed system of dikes and sluices that each paludier maintains by hand, but whose collective scale — dozens of kilometres of embankments, hundreds of pans — outstrips what a ground survey can document efficiently. The method is documented: a study by David Green, Dmitri Mauquoy and Jason Hagon, published in 2017, describes how drone photogrammetry can map, monitor and model a salt marsh at a resolution and repeat frequency impossible to reach with conventional satellite remote sensing (see the study on Google Scholar). On the Guérande marshes, the same principle serves a very concrete purpose: prioritising dike renovation campaigns instead of planning them blind, sector by sector.
Mapping vulnerability to sea-level rise: an issue 2026 made concrete
This is no longer theoretical. In early 2026, the Guérande salt workers made an unusual move: their cooperatives paid out €100,000 to fund protection works for the marshes against rising sea levels — a historically low-lying site, where a rise of a few tens of centimetres is enough to multiply the frequency of marine flooding. A study by Raphaël Musseau and colleagues, published in 2018 in the Journal of Coastal Conservation, measured rapid losses of intertidal salt marshes linked to global change on the nearby Gironde estuary — a finding directly transposable to the Guérande Atlantic coastline (see the study on Google Scholar).
To make that risk measurable and prioritise the works, drone mapping delivers what no old map can: a dated, georeferenced baseline topography of the dike network, comparable from one campaign to the next to detect settling or an emerging breach. Steps and price of a mission in 2026
A mission on the salt marshes is prepared in three stages: checking the flight path against the RCFS boundary of the traicts du Croisic and, where relevant, requesting authorisation from the reserve manager; the topography or orthophoto flight itself, usually outside the harvest season (June to September) so as not to disturb the salt workers; and delivering the data in a format the cooperative or local authority can use — a georeferenced orthophoto, a digital terrain model, a comparison with an earlier campaign where one exists.
