Drone or rope access: which solution for height inspection on an industrial site?

An industrial chimney, a wind turbine blade, the underside of a bridge or a telecom mast: these points have always been hard, costly and sometimes dangerous to reach. What only a rope-access technician can do: physical contact

The drone's limit is physical: it observes, it does not touch. As soon as a task requires contact with the structure — tightening a bolt, an ultrasonic thickness measurement, taking a sample, spot cleaning, repairing a seal or replacing a part — only a rope-access technician or an equivalent access method (aerial platform, scaffolding) can act. Contact-based non-destructive testing (ultrasonics, dye penetrant, magnetic particle) remains, as of today, beyond a standard drone's reach: these measurements require a probe placed on the surface, with controlled pressure and a coupling agent.

In practice, the best result rarely comes from an exclusive choice. The method increasingly used on industrial sites: a first drone flight that maps the whole structure and locates anomalies, followed by a rope-access intervention targeted only at the confirmed points. This combination sharply reduces the number of billed rope hours — often the costliest item — while keeping the ability to act that only physical contact allows. Conversely, a site already under a rope-access contract can add an annual drone pass to document how an already-flagged point evolves, without mobilising a full team.

On the regulatory side: rope access falls under labour-code rules on work at height and a certification renewed every three years (CQP or IRATA); the professional remote pilot falls under European drone regulation (open or specific category depending on the site) and dedicated liability insurance.
