Drone or helicopter for an aerial service in France: comparison, use cases, prices

A company needing aerial images or data rarely stops to weigh drone against helicopter: the reflex goes straight to the former, cheaper and quicker to mobilise. Yet the latter sometimes remains the right tool — a linear corridor several hundred kilometres long to cover in a single day, a payload too heavy for a civil UAS, a shot that needs a freedom of movement a 120 m ceiling forbids. The two aircraft answer different needs under different rules: here is how to decide, with price orders of magnitude on both sides.

Two regulatory regimes, not just an equipment choice

A drone flying in the open category cannot exceed 120 m above ground, with no derogation possible outside the obstacle exception (see our guide to drone flight above 120 m) — a ceiling only the specific category can cross, at the cost of a risk assessment. A helicopter performing aerial work follows the opposite frame: the minimum survey height is, in principle, 150 m outside built-up areas, reducible to 50 m under a low-flying derogation for photography, with the DGAC ruling outside built-up areas and the préfecture above inhabited zones (500 to 1,500 m depending on the size of the built-up area, absent a derogation). The drone is therefore built to fly low and close to its subject; the helicopter, to fly higher and cover vast areas.

This difference in nature, more than in performance, explains why the two aircraft coexist without really competing on most missions. It echoes a broader finding: a landmark review by Ismael Colomina and Pere Molina, published in 2014 in the ISPRS Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, already showed that the rise of unmanned aerial systems owed as much to the evolving regulatory frame as to technological progress, and that it was reshaping traditional aerial acquisition methods rather than simply substituting for them one for one (see the study on Google Scholar).

When the helicopter keeps the advantage

Three situations still tip the balance towards the helicopter:

These missions remain a minority in the landscape of French aerial services, but they exist — major energy clients, network operators, large-scale film productions.

When the drone wins: nearly all everyday services

For everything else — the vast majority of what a company, a local authority or an individual needs — the drone wins on three fronts at once. Mobilisation: a pilot arrives with their kit in a light vehicle, with no dedicated take-off ground or airport slot to book, whereas a helicopter needs a departure base, a filed flight plan and often several days' notice. Precision: for inspecting a structure, a roof or a façade, a drone can close to within a few metres with a stability a helicopter's rotor cannot match — the turbulence from its downwash rules out any close approach to a structure in any case. Access: a drone takes off from a car park, a courtyard or a pavement, where a helicopter needs a substantial clear area.

That is why nearly all industrial inspection, site photogrammetry, corporate real estate, events and precision agriculture services are now handled by drone — the helicopter adds neither quality nor speed there, only extra cost. An industrial roof spanning several thousand square metres, a construction site or a farm can be covered in a half-day of successive flights, with a single pilot or a pair, without mobilising a crew or an aviation base.

In the vast majority of cases, the question is therefore not really about price: it only arises when a mission inherently exceeds what a civil drone can cover — in length, payload or amplitude. Some specialised contractors even offer both solutions and steer the client towards whichever genuinely fits the need, rather than towards the one that bills the most.
