Espelette pepper PDO and drones: thrips, TSWV virus, vigour on small plots, price
Espelette pepper PDO is grown at a scale unlike vineyards or large arable crops: around 293 hectares spread across 180 growers in the 10 labelled communes of the Basque Country, barely more than a hectare and a half per grower on average. On these family plots grown on stakes and hand-picked from August to October, two threats weigh on the season: thrips, which sting flowers and cut production, and the fungal or viral diseases that follow. A multispectral flight documents what a field walk does not catch in time across such a fragmented area: here is what it brings, and what it never replaces.

A PDO grown on very small family plots
Espelette pepper — "Piment d'Espelette" or "Piment d'Espelette — Ezpeletako Biperra" — is the only French pepper to hold a protected designation: PDO status since 2000 (AOC) and 2002 (AOP). Its growing area is confined to 10 communes of the northern Basque Country: Ainhoa, Cambo-les-Bains, Espelette, Halsou, Itxassou, Jatxou, Larressore, Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle, Souraïde and Ustaritz. In the 2025-2026 season, the sector counted around 180 growers, 15 packers and 3 processors, for around 4.9 million plants across roughly 293 hectares — other figures from the growers' association or the prefecture put the sector at 200 to 225 operators and 250 to 299 hectares depending on the season, a normal year-to-year variation.
Per grower, the average area amounts to one to two hectares: a scale unlike anything else covered on this site, whether the 8,500 hectares of Burgundy mustard or the large arable plots elsewhere. The pepper is grown on stakes, in small plots often next to the family home, hand-picked from August to October. Part of the crop is sold fresh, another dries in garlands hung from house facades — the region's most recognisable image — before being ground into powder, for a total output of around 190 tonnes of powder in 2025-2026.
What a multispectral flight documents against thrips and virus
The main loss factor tracked by growers in the region is the thrips: this sap-sucking insect settles at the tip of flowers and on young leaves, often causing flowers to abort and cutting production without necessarily marking the fruit — hence the value of catching it early, before the yield drop only shows up at harvest. Aphids and spider mites add to the pressure, along with diseases flagged by Nouvelle-Aquitaine's market-garden plant health bulletins from early summer onward: anthracnose, fusarium wilt, bacterial spot. The principle behind separating healthy and weakened plants by spectral signature is documented right down to the pepper's own botanical genus: a study published in 2024 in Plants by Mensah, Oh, Song and Baek compared RGB and hyperspectral imaging on pepper (Capsicum) accessions, healthy and infected with Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus (TSWV), a virus spread by thrips: the NDVI index reached 0.21 to 0.23 on healthy leaf areas against just 0.14 to 0.19 on affected areas, with the diseased areas' peak reflectance sitting in the visible range between 430 and 470 nm (see the study on Google Scholar). The principle — a leaf-level spectral stress signature — transposes to multispectral imagery carried on a drone, across a whole plot rather than the contact-level lab measurement used in the study.
The honesty clause: an anomaly signals, it does not diagnose
The honesty clause. The study by Mensah and co-authors statistically separates leaf areas that are healthy from those infected with TSWV, on accessions monitored under controlled conditions and confirmed by a reference method (bioassay) alongside the imaging: it demonstrates that spectral separation is possible under these conditions, not that a single multispectral flight alone can diagnose a viral infection. On the ground, a degraded vigour index on an Espelette pepper plot signals a zone to check, never an identified cause. A localised decline can just as easily betray a thrips sting with no associated virus, an attack of aphids or spider mites, a fungal disease (anthracnose, fusarium wilt, bacterial spot) as actual TSWV — and only the latter, spread by thrips, requires lab confirmation (a serological or molecular test) before any decision, the other three being a matter of ordinary visual or entomological diagnosis in the field.
The course of action differs radically depending on the cause: a confirmed thrips infestation calls for targeted control of the vector insect; a fungal disease calls for a fungicide treatment unrelated to any insecticide; a viral infection confirmed by the lab generally requires pulling up the affected plants to stop it spreading, since there is no curative treatment for a virus. That distinction remains entirely a matter of field verification by the grower, their cooperative or their technician — the drone speeds up finding where to check first across a plot fragmented between several communes, never determining what is found there.
Who commissions this service, and 2026 prices
Given the average plot size — one to two hectares per grower —, isolated individual demand stays rare: it mostly comes from the growers' association defending the designation and from cooperatives pooling monitoring across several communes in a single campaign, from packers and processors supporting their contracted growers, and occasionally from growers grouping several neighbouring plots. These figures cover the flight and delivery of a usable vigour map within 24 to 48 hours; they do not include a lab test where a viral infection is suspected, treatment, or precisely identifying the pest or disease involved, which remain the responsibility of the grower, their cooperative or their technician.
