High-mast lighting and tall floodlight column drone inspection: price
A stadium lighting mast or a motorway-interchange column is a slender structure 20 to 40 metres tall, planted there for decades, that nobody looks at closely as long as it stands. Yet these masts fatigue: wind makes them vibrate, the base and its plate corrode, the anchor bolting loosens, and a base failure is a serious accident. Inspecting them usually means a high-reach man-lift, often a traffic closure or taking a pitch out of use. The drone climbs the mast in minutes, documenting the base, shaft, crown and floodlights, without a lift or a long closure. Here is what it inspects, for which asset managers, and prices observed in 2026.

Base, shaft, crown: what fails
On a high mast, defects concentrate at specific places. The base and anchor plate first: corrosion in water-retention zones, cracking of the plate welds, loosening or corrosion of the anchor bolting, degradation of the concrete foundation — the most critical zone, since an incipient crack at the base propagates under wind. The shaft next: corrosion, rust points at longitudinal welds, impacts. The crown and floodlights finally: luminaire fixings, walkway or lowering crown, exposed cabling.
The risk is not theoretical. A study by Quattrocchi, Martella, Lukaj and co-authors published in 2023 in Sensors notes that lighting poles collapse under wind-induced structural fatigue, and that traditional inspection struggles to anticipate it (see the study on Google Scholar). Regularly documenting the base and shaft is precisely how to catch early what this fatigue is preparing.
Drone versus man-lift: access, cost, safety
Inspecting a mast with a man-lift means mobilising a high-reach machine, often closing a lane or a pitch, and exposing an operator in a cradle. The drone climbs the shaft in minutes, orbits the crown, frames the base from every angle, and comes back down — no contact, no ground machine, no long closure. At a stadium, inspection is done outside matches and away from the public; on a motorway, in most cases without a lane closure.
Using the drone precisely for high lighting masts is not new: a Florida Department of Transportation research report by Otero, Gagliardo, Dalli, Huang and Cosentino, published in 2015, develops and tests a drone system for remote inspection of high-mast light poles and bridges (see the study on Google Scholar). The principle is now mature: obstacle-avoidance sensors, zoom, precise hover near a slender structure.
For which managers, and under which flight framework
The clients are varied: clubs and stadium operators (floodlight masts, before a season or after a storm), road and motorway managers (interchange columns, rest areas), ports and industrial estates (high lighting masts of terminals), municipalities (car-park, municipal-stadium and roundabout masts). The common thread: an ageing mast estate to prioritise on a tight budget.
