Lighthouse and maritime signal inspection by drone: method, price
A lighthouse combines every difficulty of structural inspection: the height of a steeple, the exposure of a breakwater, and often the isolation of a rock battered by swell. Century-old masonry, cornices, the lantern and its glazing, the gallery and its railings all degrade under salt spray, and every maintenance campaign starts with an expensive question: what state is the structure in, exactly? The drone answers without scaffolding or helicopter-lifted platforms: it photographs the tower over its full height, the lantern from all sides, and renders the building in 3D to prepare works. Here is how a mission on a lighthouse or beacon tower is set up, what the regulatory framework says — public managers, listed monuments — and prices observed in 2026.

Exposed heritage, costly access
French maritime signalling — lighthouses, beacon towers, harbour and landfall lights — is managed by the "phares et balises" services of the interregional sea directorates (DIRM). Since the network was fully automated, no keeper lives in these structures any more: detailed knowledge of their condition rests entirely on periodic visits, whose cost soars as soon as the structure stands at sea. Erecting scaffolding on an offshore lighthouse is an exceptional operation; even a simple check-up visit requires a vessel and a weather window.
Add a heritage dimension: a large share of French lighthouses is now listed as historic monuments, and Cordouan — the oldest still in service — has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2021. On these buildings, pre-works documentation requirements match those we describe for steeples and religious heritage: precise surveys, reversibility, traceability of interventions.
What the drone documents: tower, lantern, gallery, masonry
A typical inspection covers the tower (cracking, washed-out joints, spalling, rust staining from ties), the cornices and gallery (railing anchors, waterproofing), the lantern (glazing, dome, vents, antenna brackets), and the surroundings: base, apron, landing platform for sea-rock lighthouses. The drone orbits the building at constant distance and delivers series of georeferenced images in which every defect is located — enough to build a health record of the structure and compare campaigns year on year.
For works, photogrammetry adds 3D: a study by Arnadi Murtiyoso and Pierre Grussenmeyer published in 2017 in The Photogrammetric Record analysed the documentation of heritage buildings from close-range drone images and showed the quality — and the pitfalls — of dense models obtained on historic buildings (see the study on Google Scholar). Beacon towers, spar buoys, harbour lights: the smaller aids too
The network is not just the great lighthouses: hundreds of masonry beacon towers, spar beacons and small lights mark channels and rocky plateaus. Their traditional visit requires a vessel, a sometimes acrobatic landing, and is often limited to what can be seen from the boat. A drone launched from the tender — or from the shore for nearshore structures — photographs in minutes the masonry, the topmark, the light and its solar panels, with no agent setting foot on the structure.
This drone-assisted buoyage round slots naturally into existing campaigns: the tender follows its usual round, the pilot covers each structure on the way. It matches what we describe for port structures: the drone excels precisely where human access costs most — the foreshore, isolated rocks, the upper parts.
Regulations: coastline, semaphore stations, listed monuments
Flying along the coast requires the usual checks: prohibited or restricted zones on the official drone map, the frequent proximity of naval semaphore stations and coastal military zones where flight is banned, busy beaches in season — the rules detailed in our drone and coastline guide apply in full. At sea, the mission is coordinated with the managing authority (DIRM), and flying from a boat calls for a pilot trained in that exercise.
On a lighthouse listed as a historic monument, the drone inspection needs no specific heritage authorisation — it does not touch the building — but the images feed files reviewed with State services: better to frame them from the outset with the architect in charge. - Onshore or harbour lighthouse (full visual inspection, report): €600 to €1,500.
- Sea-rock lighthouse (boat mobilisation included, excluding the vessel itself if provided by the authority): €1,500 to €4,000 depending on distance and weather window.
- Full photogrammetry of a building (3D model, façade orthophotos for a works file): €1,800 to €4,500.
- Buoyage round (series of beacon towers and lights along a boat campaign): allow €150 to €300 per structure beyond five structures covered.
