Livestock counting and monitoring by thermal drone: method and price

A herd of suckler cows spread over 40 hectares of hilly pasture, broken up by hedges and copses: counting them reliably on foot or by quad bike takes a good hour, and it only takes one animal lying down in a dip or in the shade of a copse to throw the total off. Drones, especially fitted with a thermal camera, change that: fifteen to twenty minutes of flight is enough to cover the whole plot and spot every animal, including the ones no eye on the ground would have caught. Here is how a drone headcount works, what it enables beyond simple counting, and what it costs in 2026.

Why counting by eye gets unreliable past a few hectares

On a small, flat, open plot, a glance is enough. The problem starts with the size of the holding and the terrain: hilly pasture, hedgerows, woodland edges, gullies and wet patches all offer corners where a lying or shaded animal disappears completely from view, whether you are on foot, on horseback or on a quad. A herd spread across several non-adjoining plots, split by a road or a stream, multiplies travel time and the risk of missing part of it.

The morning fog common in valley bottoms, rain that pushes animals to huddle under trees, or simply the early winter nightfall all make life harder for a farmer who needs to check the herd before heading in. On large suckler herds or mountain summer pastures, a full headcount sometimes takes several people half a day — time few holdings can spare each week for a simple presence check.

How the thermal drone spots every animal, even lying down or in shade

A thermal camera does not look for a shape, it looks for heat: the body temperature of cattle, sheep or horses (around 38-39 °C) stands out clearly against grass, bare earth or undergrowth, even through sparse foliage that would hide the animal from a normal camera. The best window is early morning or evening, when the temperature gap between the animals and their surroundings is largest; in full summer sun, warmed ground can instead narrow that contrast and make the analysis trickier.

The pilot flies a grid pattern at 60-80 m, covering the plot in parallel strips with no blind spots. Thermal images are always paired with a visible-light pass: it confirms each detection (ruling out a still-warm manure heap or a sun-warmed rock) and, often, identifies the animal by its coat or ear tag if the flight drops a little lower. France's livestock institute (Idele) has spent several years developing automated counting algorithms from this kind of imagery; the technology remains at the experimental stage, and the count today is still confirmed by a human reviewing the images.

Beyond counting: calving, lameness and stray animals

Once the crew is on site, the same flight often serves several purposes at once. During calving season, a morning pass can reveal a cow isolated from the rest of the herd — the classic sign of calving underway or imminent — without walking the plot on foot and without stressing an animal already on edge. An animal that is limping, or stays lying down longer than the others, stands out the same way when the images are reviewed, often before a health issue becomes visible from the road.

What the rules say about flying over a herd

Agricultural flights over pasture and summer grazing land mostly fall under open-category sub-category A3: far from people, more than 150 m from residential areas, below 120 m, with the operator registered on AlphaTango. Flying over a gathering of livestock is no longer formally banned by the rules in force — the ban appeared in older decrees — but professional common sense still calls for a distance and altitude that avoid triggering panic, particularly on the first few passes before the herd gets used to the drone's noise.

Frequently asked questions about drone livestock counting

Does the drone disturb the herd? At the usual flight altitude (60 m and above) and with a gradual approach, most herds get used to it within a few passes and keep grazing normally. The first flight is the trickiest: the pilot watches the animals' reaction and adjusts altitude accordingly.

What weather gives the best thermal contrast? Early morning after a clear night, once the ground has cooled while the animals still hold their body heat. An overcast previous night or ground soaked by rain narrows the contrast and makes the images harder to read.

Can counting be fully automated, without a human review? Not yet reliably for everyday use: automated counting algorithms, including the ones studied by France's livestock institute, are promising but still in development. Today an operator always reviews the images to confirm the total.
