End of life for a professional drone battery: recycling, REP obligations and where to take it

A professional drone fleet does not only wear out through the aircraft itself: it is the lithium batteries that age first, warp after a hard landing, or simply lose capacity through repeated charge cycles. That raises a question few pilots can answer with confidence: what should be done with a drone battery at the end of its life? The ordinary bin is out — not just on environmental principle, but because a wrongly discarded lithium battery is now one of the leading causes of fire at French sorting centres. Why a used drone battery is never ordinary waste

A crushed, compressed or punctured lithium-polymer battery can enter thermal runaway: a chain reaction that suddenly releases heat and flammable gases, up to and including fire. That is exactly what happens when a battery thrown out with ordinary waste ends up in a shredder or under the compacting plate of a refuse truck. What the European battery regulation changed from August 2025

Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 on batteries and waste batteries has applied since 18 August 2025 and replaces the old 2006 directive. It extends the French extended producer responsibility (REP) scheme for "batteries and accumulators" to new categories, including industrial batteries: the category professional drone batteries fall under in practice, unlike consumer portable batteries (remote controls, small appliances), which stay in a separate category. That classification has a direct consequence: the company placing batteries on the French market — manufacturer, importer or distributor, including via a marketplace — is responsible for organising their collection and end-of-life recycling, free of charge for the professional holder who returns them.

In practice, separate collection and take-back are handled by a state-accredited eco-organisation: ecosystem, which absorbed Corepile in mid-2025, alongside Batribox (formerly Screlec), both accredited to run this scheme through 2030. The regulation also sets numerical targets: 65% recycling efficiency for lithium batteries by the end of 2025, and a new waste-battery classification applying from 9 November 2026. In practice, where and how to hand in an end-of-life drone battery

For a company, the simplest route runs through the professional collection points spread across the country, or through pickup organised directly at head office, a warehouse or a workshop for larger volumes — eco-organisations come to collect batteries that have already been sorted and often supply suitable containers. This circuit is separate from the one for the drone itself: once its battery is removed, the aircraft falls under the WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment) scheme, not the battery scheme — two separate streams for one retired piece of equipment.

A study by Oguchi and Terazono, published in 2025 in the same journal, shows just how underused this circuit remains even where it exists: in Japan, while official collection schemes theoretically cover 77% of portable lithium batteries reaching end of life, only 14% are actually collected in practice — a gap largely made up of batteries thrown out with household rubbish or stored indefinitely for lack of awareness of the scheme (see the study on Google Scholar).
