Race circuits and karting tracks: drone track surveys, and the rule that changes everything once there's a crowd
A race circuit or karting track operator has two drone needs that share almost nothing. The first is technical: documenting the state of the track surface — cracks, bitumen bleeding, low points where water pools — to prioritise maintenance and prepare for homologation-related inspections. The second is about events: filming a race for communications or a sponsor. The catch is that as soon as the grandstands fill up, that second use shifts into an entirely different regulatory regime. Here is how to tell the two missions apart, and what they cost in 2026.

A track surface wears out fast, and a walking inspection sees little of it
An approved circuit takes a kind of punishment no ordinary road ever has to withstand: slick or semi-slick tyres heating the bitumen in every braking zone, racing lines repeated to the metre that concentrate wear on the same bands of tarmac, and high thermal loads in the middle of summer. The Technical and Safety Rules published by the FFSA (French Motorsport Federation) for both asphalt and karting circuits set out the expected condition of the track surface, safety run-off areas and drainage during homologation-related technical inspections — an operator who lets degradation build up risks a remark, or even a usage restriction, at the least convenient moment.
The trouble is that a traditional walking inspection — a technical manager walking the track before an event — mostly spots defects already visible at eye level: open potholes, wide cracks, puddles after rain. It documents change over time poorly, with no objective comparison from one inspection to the next, and it almost always misses bitumen bleeding — the binder rising to the surface that makes the track slippery in hot weather, and which shows up far more clearly from above on the acceleration and braking zones where the binder migrates upward.
What an aerial survey reveals about the track surface
A low-altitude photogrammetric survey flown on a day with no track activity produces one continuous orthophoto of the entire layout — anywhere from a few hundred metres to several kilometres depending on the circuit — at a resolution fine enough to tell a hairline crack apart from an ordinary expansion joint. A study by Youzhi Pan, Xuesong Zhang, Guido Cervone and Liping Yang, published in 2018 in the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing, showed that multispectral imagery captured by drone can automatically detect potholes and cracks on asphalt pavement (see the study on Google Scholar) — a method built for the road network but directly transferable to a circuit's asphalt, where defects are more concentrated and the distance to cover much shorter.
Applied to a track, this survey brings out three families of defects the eye struggles to catch from ground level: networked cracking that precedes localised subsidence, bleeding that reads as a darker, smoother patch through fast corners and braking zones, and low points in the cross-slope where water pools after rain — a direct aquaplaning risk at full speed. Cross-checked against the previous survey, the orthophoto tracks how a crack progresses from one season to the next instead of discovering it once it has already become a pothole, and prioritises which sections to resurface before the racing season opens rather than in an emergency after an incident.
Filming a race with spectators in the stands: the rule that changes everything
The track survey described above happens on a quiet day with an empty track: it is an ordinary flight, with no particular risk over people. Filming a race with spectators present falls under a completely different regime. Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/947 defines an assembly of people as a gathering where people are unable to move away because of crowd density — exactly the situation of a grandstand or an observation bank on race day. In the open category, flying over an assembly of people is forbidden, whatever the drone's class — even a sub-250g C0 drone does not escape it. In practice, most race-day filming stays outside the areas where the crowd gathers: shots of the track itself, of the paddock outside peak hours, or side-on grandstand shots taken from a distance, never passing directly overhead of spectators. Organising the mission: picking the right day and coordinating with the operator
A track-surface survey is almost always scheduled outside track-day sessions: an empty circuit, full access to every part of the racing line, kerbs and run-off areas alike, with no safety constraint from moving vehicles. It is also the moment to document guardrails, tyre barriers and run-off zones, useful for the operator preparing FFSA or CIK-FIA technical inspections without waiting for a steward's remark. On a karting track, the low height of the installations and the tighter footprint allow a lower flight altitude with even better resolution on the track surface, often in a single outing under an hour.
Event filming is more complex to organise: coordination with both the circuit operator and the event organiser on approved time slots, precise identification of where the crowd is likely to gather (entrances, refreshment stands, photo areas), and, if the circuit sits in controlled airspace, prior contact with the airfield manager. A drone pilot offering both services — technical survey and event footage — is better off pricing them as two separate missions in the quote, given how differently their regulatory constraints and preparation play out.
