Sailboat mast, rigging and hull inspection by drone: method, flying over ports, price

A boat owner preparing a pre-purchase survey, a skipper who wants to check the rigging before a crossing, or a boatyard documenting the state of a hull without mobilising a platform in dry dock: in all three cases, climbing the mast in a bosun's chair or setting up scaffolding remains the default option — slow, and not without a real fall risk. A drone offers an alternative: it inspects the masthead, spreaders and standing rigging in a few minutes, or flies over a hull in dry storage, without a technician having to hang from it. But since summer 2025, a new law strictly regulates flying a drone over maritime ports, with penalties that are now criminal. Here is what a drone can inspect on a boat, what the regulations say, and what it costs in 2026.

Why the drone changes boat inspection

On a sailboat, the trickiest part to inspect is always what sits up high: the masthead, the wind vane, the spreaders, the halyard blocks, the condition of the turnbuckles and standing-rigging wires. The traditional method means hoisting a crew member up the mast in a bosun's chair, or calling in a professional rigger — an operation that takes time, keeps the boat tied up at the dock, and is not risk-free: working at height remains one of the leading causes of serious accidents on board, whether in recreational boating or merchant shipping.

A drone fitted with a high-resolution, stabilised camera, flown a few metres from the mast, delivers sharp images of every attachment point without anyone having to leave the deck. On a hull out of the water (boatyard, careening area), it avoids setting up scaffolding or mobilising an aerial platform just to photograph a waterline, a gelcoat repair or a suspected osmosis patch high up on a large boat.

What a drone can inspect on a sailboat or motorboat

Three use cases cover most of the demand. Rigging and mast: close-up photos and video of the masthead, spreaders, blocks, the visual condition of the wires (rust, broken strands) and turnbuckles — a first diagnosis that does not remove the need for a physical check if something looks wrong, but helps target what to verify before unstepping the mast. Hull out of the water: on a large boat in dry dock, the drone documents the whole hull in a few minutes, useful for a pre-purchase survey report or antifouling follow-up. Deck and superstructure: the condition of the coachroof, winches, deck paint, overview shots for a sale listing or an insurance file.

A 2024 study published in the journal Measurement by Peña, Díaz, Orjales and Pita describes a drone system designed for visual inspection and ultrasonic wall-thickness measurement inside ship tanks, replacing the scaffolding and platforms usually needed for this kind of work at height (see the study on Google Scholar). The authors highlight the same benefit that applies to recreational boating: replacing a risky, costly physical access with a precise hovering flight, without the drone replacing classic non-destructive testing when a certified measurement is required.

A drone remains powerless below the waterline, though: for a boat afloat, inspecting the submerged hull is a job for an underwater drone (ROV) or a diver, not an aerial drone.

What the 2025 law changes about flying over maritime ports

Law no. 2025-532 of 13 June 2025 introduced article L.5336-10-5 into the French transport code, which criminally penalises flying a drone above the administrative limits of a maritime port without authorisation: one year's imprisonment and a €15,000 fine in the general case, rising to two years and €30,000 above container-handling port facilities. This is not an airspace closure like a standard no-fly zone, but a usage ban specific to the transport code, layered on top of the usual aviation rules — and non-compliance is now a criminal offence, which changes the picture for any nautical survey carried out within the grounds of a commercial or fishing port, or a marina that falls under one administratively.

In practice, a remote pilot working on a boat in dry dock or at a mooring must check, before flying, whether the site falls within the administrative limits of a maritime port under this law — information that does not necessarily appear on standard regulated-zone maps such as Géoportail, and which is best obtained from the harbour master's office or port authority. A private boatyard outside any port perimeter is generally not covered by this specific provision, but remains subject to the ordinary aviation rules of the open category.

Flight category, people on board and insurance

Outside the specific case of ports, a mast or hull inspection most often falls under the open category: sub-category A1 if the drone flies over a boat with no one on board and no bystanders nearby, or A2 whenever a crew member stays on deck during the flight — which requires a safety distance and, depending on the drone's class, additional training for the remote pilot. As with any professional mission, the operator must be registered on AlphaTango, and professional third-party liability insurance covers the flight itself, separate from any site access authorisation issued by the boatyard, harbour master or boat owner.

Nor does the drone replace the marine surveyor: much like a licensed surveyor's topographic survey of a plot of land (see our guide to drone surveying), a drone inspection supplies high-resolution images that feed into the report, but a certified plate-thickness measurement or validating the state of the rigging before a long crossing remains, when in doubt, a job for a qualified professional who puts hands on it.

The price of a drone nautical inspection in 2026

The price mainly depends on the size of the boat, the number of points to inspect and the location (afloat, in dry dock, in a regulated port area). Orders of magnitude observed in France in 2026:

That price should be weighed against a bosun's-chair intervention or scaffolding in dry dock, which takes longer to mobilise and is billed by the technician's hour: the drone does not remove the need for a physical check if an anomaly is spotted, but it delivers a fast initial diagnosis and thorough documentation of the boat, often carried out alongside a standard marine survey rather than instead of one.
