Tree health and fall-risk assessment by drone: method, complement to VTA, price
A street tree that drops a main limb on a busy road, or a park plane tree that collapses on a windy day, exposes the manager's liability — a town, a département, a social landlord, a landowning business. The reference diagnosis, the VTA (Visual Tree Assessment) method, is carried out on the ground at the foot of the tree; but the crown, where decline, deadwood and high cavities show up, often stays out of sight from below. The drone does not replace the arborist's eye: it gives access to the whole crown, from an angle no pair of binoculars reproduces. Here is what it actually adds, its limits, and the prices observed in 2026.

What the ground does not show: the crown seen from above
A VTA diagnosis at the foot of the tree reads the root collar, the trunk and the low branches well, but leaves the upper crown in a blind spot: localised defoliation, deadwood at the top, included forks, cavities and wood-decay fungi on the high scaffold limbs, uneven leaf-out between branches. The drone flies around and over the crown a few metres out, producing close-up views of each scaffold limb from several angles, and documents what a ground-based arborist can only estimate through binoculars.
A systematic review by Hamzah, Zainal and Zakaria published in 2025 in Arboriculture & Urban Forestry, covering 27 peer-reviewed studies, takes stock of what drones add to tree risk assessment: it confirms the value of aerial imagery for objectifying crown condition, while stressing that it complements the existing assessment method rather than replacing it (see the study on Google Scholar).
Vegetation indices: spotting decline before it is visible
Beyond the visual, a multispectral camera computes vegetation indices (including NDVI) that reflect foliage vigour: a crown sector under water stress, attacked by a pest or entering decline shows up on the index map before leaf loss becomes clearly visible to the eye. On a row of several dozen trees, this map ranks at a glance which subjects to examine first, rather than inspecting every tree with the same level of attention.

What the drone does not do: the decision stays with the arborist
Aerial imagery probes neither the internal wood nor the roots: a trunk cavity suspected on an image is checked by probing (resistograph, sonic tomography), and root anchorage entirely escapes the camera. Nor does the drone hand down the risk class: it is the arborist who cross-references the aerial images with the ground inspection, the VTA method and, where needed, instrumental testing, to decide on felling, safety pruning or simple monitoring.
The flight is therefore best thought of as a tool for the assessor, not a stand-alone diagnosis: the drone provider delivers usable crown views and, where relevant, an index map, which the consulting arborist folds into their report. Across an estate of several hundred trees, this aerial triage avoids mobilising a cherry picker on every single tree before knowing which one truly warrants it.
