Drone and Tree-Top Adventure Parks: Aerial Canopy Diagnostics Alongside the Mandatory Annual Inspection, Price
An anchor bolted into an oak whose crown, seen from the neighbouring platform, looked perfectly healthy — until a flyover revealed a bracket fungus fruiting on a main limb, ten metres higher, out of sight for any harnessed climber. The regulatory inspection of a tree-top adventure course happens at platform height, anchor by anchor; the upper face of the canopy — the real health of the trees carrying the whole structure — stays largely out of view from the ground and from the platforms alike. The drone replaces neither the accredited inspector nor the regulatory arboricultural diagnosis, but it gives adventure-park operators a fast way to map that blind spot before the season opens. A tree-top course's regulatory inspection: three levels, one blind spot
The NF EN 15567-1 (design and construction) and NF EN 15567-2 (operation, maintenance and inspection) standards govern tree-top adventure courses in France. No single decree makes them mandatory, but they form the professional reference required by nearly every liability insurer specialising in the sector : straying from them effectively means being shut out of the insurance market — which makes them unavoidable for any serious operator. They set out three levels of inspection, summarised below.

That annual general inspection happens on rope, station by station : the inspector tests anchors and checks the load-bearing structure locally, around each point they reach. The trees' own health falls to a separate arboricultural diagnosis, usually carried out at the trunk base and while accessing the platforms — without a systematic survey of the crown's upper face, the only vantage point from which a defect overhead actually becomes visible.
What the drone adds: the canopy seen from above
A photogrammetric flyover of every support tree reaches what neither a harnessed climber nor a ground observer easily sees: dead branches in the crown above the lifelines and platforms, bracket fungi fruiting on main limbs, included-bark forks, or a thinning, declining crown on a tree that otherwise looks healthy at the base. A study by Duncan Slater, published in 2023 in Arboriculture & Urban Forestry, compared several flight strategies for building, through mini-drone photogrammetry, 3D models of structural features on mature broadleaf trees — confirming that a consumer-grade drone is enough to collect usable structural crown data without climbing (see the study on Google Scholar).
Automated detection is moving just as fast as the imagery: a study by Qiwen Qiu and Denvid Lau, published in 2024 in the journal Forests, pairs two deep-learning networks with drone observations to detect and quantify a tree's structural defects, reaching an average accuracy of 92.62% on measured defect size (see the study on Google Scholar). That places the technique's current state clearly: a reliable screening tool for prioritising, not yet a certified diagnosis that could replace an arborist's eye and experience. Method, deliverables and flight framework
The campaign is scheduled away from the public — before the season opens or outside operating hours — since during opening hours, visitors harnessed in the trees count as uninvolved third parties the flight must avoid. Each support tree is photographed from several angles to rebuild a 3D model or, at minimum, a set of georeferenced images of its crown, on the same principle as our photogrammetry guide. The deliverable pairs a per-tree sheet — numbered on the same plan used by the accredited inspector — with a screening report ranking observed points by urgency: to monitor, to have checked at the inspector's next visit, or to flag straight away to a climbing arborist for a close-up look. That targeting spares the inspector spending identical rope time on every tree, when their time remains, just as for a rope technician on a wind turbine, the most expensive and constrained resource in the inspection — the same logic already described in our wind turbine drone inspection guide.
The drone never replaces the mandatory annual general inspection: it runs no mechanical load test on an anchor, no mallet-tap survey for internal cavities, and exempts nothing from a physical check of lifelines or connectors. Nor does it replace the regulatory arboricultural diagnosis carried out by a qualified professional. The flight itself stays simple to frame: an isolated forest site outside a populated area generally falls under the open category, subject to the usual heights and distances from nearby residents and any power line crossing the plot. 2026 prices (excl. VAT): €700 to €1,600 for a typically sized course (15 to 30 support trees), report and per-tree sheets included; a follow-up campaign the next year, on the same flight plan, typically costs 20 to 30% less.
Frequently asked questions about aerial diagnostics for tree-top courses
Does the drone remove the need for the annual general inspection? No: inspection by an independent accredited body or inspector remains the reference insurers require; the drone is a screening complement to it, not a substitute.
Who commissions this service? The adventure park operator, usually before the season opens, or the site manager (local authority, the national forestry office ONF, a tourism concession) when the course sits in public forest.
How often should the flyover be repeated? An annual rhythm, timed just before the general inspection, gives the inspector an up-to-date screening; a second pass at the end of the season helps prepare the winter arboricultural diagnosis.
Can the drone fly during the park's opening hours? That isn't recommended: visitors harnessed in the trees count as uninvolved third parties, so most campaigns are scheduled away from the public instead.
