Agricultural damage assessment by drone after hail or storms: method and insurance claims
A hailstorm that sweeps across a 40-hectare plot in ten minutes, a storm that flattens a standing crop just before harvest: the real scale of a climate-related farm loss cannot be judged at a glance from the track. Hail in particular strikes in narrow bands, sometimes just a few dozen metres wide, leaving one row of vines wrecked next to an untouched one — a contrast that a walk on foot captures poorly, and one the following days, as plants naturally recover, tend to erase. Documenting the extent of the damage quickly and cleanly still shapes what comes next: the file opened with the crop insurer, or the agricultural disaster declaration. Here is how a drone flight helps, what it does not replace, and what it costs in 2026.

Why widespread storm or hail damage is hard to document on foot
On a plot spanning several hectares — arable crops, vines or orchards — a weather event almost never strikes evenly. Hail moves in narrow corridors that can spare one row of vines and wreck the next one five metres away; a storm flattens a whole section of a wheat field while leaving standing the edge sheltered by a hedge; spring frost hits hardest in the low ground where cold air pools. Walking the plot to gauge the real extent of the damage means covering multiple transects, a slow exercise on a large area and inevitably a partial one: the farmer or expert extrapolates from a sample of points visited, risking an under- or overestimate of the share of the plot actually affected.
Time makes it harder still. A vine leaf riddled with hail marks or a flattened wheat ear are visual signatures that fade within days: the plant partly compensates, rain flattens the crop a little further or a dry wind partly straightens it back up, and a row trampled by repeated visits blurs the picture even more. On a holding with several non-adjoining plots, sometimes several kilometres apart, the time lost travelling from one site to the next delays all the more the moment the extent of the loss is objectively fixed.
What a drone flight documents: extent, severity, georeferencing
A drone flight carried out soon after the event, by contrast, produces a georeferenced, dated overview of the whole plot — the aerial equivalent of a photograph taken at the same instant across every square metre, rather than a judgement pieced together from a handful of waypoints. Flying a grid at 60-80 m, the drone covers several hectares in fifteen to thirty minutes and returns a high-resolution orthophoto where the edge of the hail corridor, the section flattened by wind or the frost-hit hollow show up with a precision a walked survey simply cannot match over that kind of area.
Where the holding has already had an agronomic drone survey earlier in the season — an NDVI vigour map, for instance, as covered in our guide to vineyard vigour mapping — that pre-event flight serves as a baseline: compared with the post-event pass, it objectively measures the gap rather than relying on a visual description alone. Without a baseline flight, the post-event orthophoto is still far more complete and better dated than a ground survey, and it holds up as evidence even if the expert only visits the site several days later.
The drone is not the expert: it makes the file faster and more objective
In France, a farmer covered by a multi-risk climate insurance contract (MRC) — the contract that, since law n° 2022-298 of 2 March 2022, structures cover for the seventeen recognised climate hazards, including hail, storms and frost — opens a file with their interlocuteur agréé (the insurer authorised to handle the claim) as soon as the loss is noted. It is an expert appointed by that interlocuteur agréé who carries out the official loss assessment and sets the compensation amount; a drone flight does not replace that statutory assessment and its on-site joint inspection.
What the drone does bring is a dated, geolocated photographic record available within the first few days, which the farmer can pass on to their interlocuteur agréé and show the expert during the visit — a use of aerial photography as supporting evidence already common for storm-damaged roofs, which we cover in our guide to roof inspection after a storm. On a holding with scattered plots, or a wine estate hit unevenly by a hail band, this record mainly helps focus attention early on where it matters: the share of the area that crosses the compensation threshold — set at 50% loss for arable crops, industrial crops, vegetables and viticulture, and 30% for orchards and grassland — stands out sooner from areas with more limited loss.
Regulatory framework and the window to act
The flight itself usually falls under open-category sub-category A3, under the same conditions as other agricultural missions: far from people, more than 150 m from residential areas, below 120 m, with the operator registered on AlphaTango. The real critical factor is not regulatory but time-based: unlike a monitoring flight scheduled weeks ahead, an assessment mission plays out within the 24 to 72 hours following the event, before rain, wind or new growth blur the visual signature of the damage, and strictly before any clean-up, mowing or harvesting work erases the evidence on the ground. The price of a drone agricultural damage assessment in 2026
The price mainly depends on the area to cover, the number of plots and how fast a response is needed. Ranges observed in France in 2026:

Worth comparing with in-season vigour mapping, priced at €8 to €30 per hectare under precision agriculture by drone: a post-event assessment mission follows a per-mission logic rather than a per-area one, since the response speed required and the time spent analysing the images weigh more than flight time alone. This price covers the flight and the georeferenced photographic report, not the statutory loss assessment itself.
Frequently asked questions about drone agricultural damage assessment
Does the drone replace the visit from the insurer's appointed expert? No: it documents the extent of the damage with a dated, geolocated image, but only the joint on-site visit from the expert appointed by the interlocuteur agréé officially sets the loss rate and the compensation amount.
Does the insurer need to approve the flight beforehand? It is not a requirement, but it helps to let your interlocuteur agréé know: dated, georeferenced photographs are increasingly accepted as supporting evidence for the file, on the same footing as photos taken on the ground.
How soon after the event should the flight happen? As soon as possible, ideally within 24 to 72 hours, before weather or regrowth blur the traces of the damage and before any clean-up or harvesting work on the affected plot.
Does this apply to every type of crop? The principle applies just as much to arable crops as to viticulture, orchards or grassland: the same seventeen climate hazards covered by multi-risk climate contracts trigger the process, though the compensation threshold varies by type of production.
