Almond orchards and drone: Xylella fastidiosa, young orchards and early frost, price

Almonds have become a crop growers in France dare to replant again: after decades of near-disappearance, the industry is being relaunched, driven both by collective schemes in Provence and by private investors in Occitania. But planting an almond orchard in 2026 also means facing a threat the Mediterranean olive industry already knows all too well: Xylella fastidiosa, an incurable quarantine bacterium capable of ruining a freshly planted investment within a few years. Between vigilance against this bacterium and the standard monitoring of a young, establishing orchard, a drone survey has a precise role to play — no more, no less than what it genuinely documents. Here is what it brings a project developer, a cooperative or an investor in 2026.

An industry being rebuilt: figures and relaunch plans

It is often overlooked, but France imports the bulk of the almonds it consumes: the national industry produces on the order of 1,000 t a year, while the needs of confectionery, pastry-making and food processing are met by more than 42,000 t imported every year, mostly from California and Spain. The French orchard is correspondingly tiny: around 1,164 ha in production according to the regional farm chambers, with Occitania alone accounting for close to 45 % of national output.

That imbalance has fed a relaunch movement in recent years, driven by two quite different kinds of actors. On one side, collective schemes: in Provence, a first multi-year framework agreement has been signed between growers and marketers, with around 230 ha already replanted in the region. On the other, private investors: La Compagnie des Amandes, now the sector's leading private planter, has passed the 300-ha mark within a few years, with stated ambitions to go well beyond. In both cases, these are young plantings with heavy capital committed per hectare, run by organisations that already think in terms of monitoring tools rather than a walk-through inspection — exactly the profile for which drone-based monitoring makes sense from the moment of planting.

Xylella fastidiosa: the quarantine bacterium hanging over every young orchard

Xylella fastidiosa is a priority quarantine organism for the European Union (Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/1201), spread by piercing-sucking insects that feed on xylem sap — in France, mainly spittlebugs of the genus Philaenus. Its presence is confirmed in delimited zones in Corsica, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region and in Occitania, where territorial surveillance (the regional farm and food authority, DRAAF-SRAL, and the plant health body, FREDON) and the mandatory removal of contaminated plants are governed by prefectoral orders: no curative treatment against the bacterium itself exists to date.

Almond trees are not among the most publicised hosts of the Xylella crisis — olive trees in Puglia have drawn most of the attention — but they are among the hosts hit hardest once the bacterium takes hold. In Spain, the multiplex subspecies (strain ST6) has caused considerable damage to almond orchards in the province of Alicante, and the outbreak detected as early as 2016 on the island of Majorca, in the Balearic archipelago, confirmed the bacterium's presence — across all subspecies — on a long list of hosts including grapevine, olive, oleander, almond, cherry, ash, fig and walnut. For a young French orchard planted at great expense in southern regions close to existing delimited zones, the scenario is therefore anything but theoretical: a confirmed contamination leads to uprooting, with no guarantee of compensation matching the investment made.

Aerial detection of Xylella by drone is, by contrast, an already mature field — developed on olive trees in the Italian region of Puglia, where the bacterium has destroyed hundreds of thousands of hectares since 2013. A study by Attilio Di Nisio, Francesco Adamo, Giuseppe Acciani and Filippo Attivissimo, published in 2020 in Sensors, tested drone-acquired multispectral imagery over olive groves in southern Italy: after automatic segmentation of each tree, a linear discriminant analysis classified affected trees with 98 % sensitivity and 93 % precision (see the study on Google Scholar). A further study, published in 2021 in Remote Sensing by Annamaria Castrignanò, Antonella Belmonte, Ilaria Antelmi and co-authors, went further by targeting early detection, ahead of symptom worsening: across three olive groves in Puglia monitored by drone multispectral imagery and a radiometer between 2017 and 2019, the method classified the "early detection" class with a cross-validation accuracy of 77 % (see the study on Google Scholar). Applied to a young almond orchard, the method carries over unchanged: a repeated multispectral flight flags trees losing vigour before decline is visible to the eye, directing a targeted sampling check rather than an exhaustive walk of the orchard. Such flagging never replaces the official diagnosis: only a PCR analysis carried out by an accredited laboratory, as part of FREDON surveillance, can confirm or rule out the bacterium's presence.

Young orchard, early bloom: monitoring specific to a planting that is just starting

Beyond Xylella vigilance, a young almond orchard calls for the standard monitoring of any planting that is just starting: counting missing plants after the first winter or a summer drought, on the same principle as our guide to orchard yield estimation by drone counting, and mapping vigour through multispectral imagery to spot, plot by plot, the areas where establishment is slowest — useful for targeting supplementary irrigation or localised replanting before the gap between rows widens.

One constraint is specific to the almond tree: it is the earliest-flowering fruit tree in the French orchard, with some varieties blooming as early as January in the mildest Mediterranean areas — several weeks ahead of the apricot or the peach.
