Archaeological survey by drone: photogrammetry, LiDAR, method and price
Documenting an ongoing excavation, revealing the footprint of a site buried under crops, or building a 3D model of the remains of a heritage building: archaeology has adopted the drone well beyond simple aerial photography. Photogrammetry for millimetre-accurate recording, multispectral sensors to spot vegetation marks invisible to the naked eye, LiDAR to see through forest cover — each technique answers a specific need. Here is how a drone archaeological survey or documentation mission works, and what it costs.

What the drone brings to field archaeology
An excavation is traditionally documented with a camera on a pole or a telescopic mast, with partial coverage and limited geometric accuracy. The drone changes the scale: in a flight lasting a few minutes, it produces several hundred photos which, stitched together by photogrammetry, yield a 3D model and an orthophoto of the whole site, updated at each stage of the dig to track progress layer by layer.
Beyond an open excavation, the drone is also used for survey work: spotting a still-buried site before any intervention. A synthesis published in the journal Drones by Fiz, Martín, Cuesta, Subías, Codina and Cartes in 2022 illustrates the range of uses now common — geometric documentation, high-resolution multispectral analysis, 3D modelling and printing of remains — and highlights the qualitative gain these tools bring to non-intrusive site documentation.
Photogrammetry, multispectral, LiDAR: which technique for which need
Photogrammetry remains the reference technique for documenting an open excavation or a visible structure: it produces a point cloud and a textured mesh from ordinary photos, usable in the same software as for a professional topographic survey. Multispectral or infrared imagery serves prospection: on a cultivated plot, buried remains (foundations, filled-in ditches) locally change the soil's water reserve and therefore the vigour of the vegetation above — growth marks invisible to the naked eye but revealed by a calibrated image taken at the right time of the season.
Airborne LiDAR, rarer since it requires a dedicated onboard sensor, sees through forest canopy by measuring thousands of ground points despite the vegetation: it is the only method able to reveal man-made relief (terraces, hollow ways, field systems) under dense woodland, where ordinary photogrammetry only sees the treetops. A single site can combine all three approaches across the phases of a project.
Regulation and coordination with the archaeological department
The flight itself follows the general open-category rules: sub-category A2 or A3 depending on proximity to third parties, 120 m maximum height, a remote pilot registered as an operator on AlphaTango. For a scheduled or rescue excavation, the drone operation fits into the timetable set by the regional archaeology department: it has no special regulatory status under heritage law, but the deliverables (georeferenced orthophoto, 3D model, flight report) are usually included in the final report submitted to the authorities. Checking regulated zones beforehand on the Géoportail map remains essential, particularly in rural areas near an aerodrome.
The price of a drone archaeological documentation mission in 2026
The price depends on the technique used, the surface area and the deliverable level (a simple photo set or a 3D model usable in a scientific publication). Orders of magnitude observed in France in 2026:

For an open site, these amounts stay well below the cost of a traditional ground topometric survey, with far less time needed on site — a real advantage on a dig where every day counts.
Frequently asked questions about drone archaeological survey
Does the drone replace a test pit? No: it documents and guides research, but only ground testing confirms the nature and dating of a buried structure spotted from aerial photos.
When in the year are vegetation marks most visible? During a period of moderate water stress, usually late spring or summer depending on the crop: growth contrasts are then at their sharpest.
Is the 3D model usable in a scientific publication? Yes, provided the flight follows a proper overlap protocol with enough ground control points — a point to confirm with the operator before the mission.
Is the landowner's consent required? Yes, always, in addition to any archaeological permit: flying over private property remains subject to the owner's agreement.
