Driven by decarbonisation targets, France's fleet of biomass boiler plants and wood-fired district heating networks keeps growing - and ageing. The boiler house roof, the flue chimney, the wood chip or pellet supply silo: a drone covers all of these in a single flight, with no scaffolding and no shutdown. Why biomass boiler plants increasingly turn to drones

The number of wood-fired district heating networks keeps growing in France every year, driven by decarbonisation targets and ADEME's Fonds chaleur grant scheme: nearly seven networks out of ten now run on biomass, the country's leading renewable energy source for heat production. A study published in an edited volume on local energy transitions documented how these wood-fired boiler plants are sited in relation to forestry supply chains and the local industrial fabric (see the study on Google Scholar). This growth comes with a fleet of boiler plants, some ageing and some newly commissioned, that needs ongoing monitoring: the boiler house itself, the flue chimney, the wood chip or pellet supply silo, and sometimes the buried district heating pipework leaving the site.

A biomass boiler plant carries several risks an operator needs to watch: self-heating of the stored fuel, degradation of insulation and the chimney under repeated thermal cycles, energy loss through the boiler house roof, and compliance with the ICPE prescriptions that govern the installation. A drone covers all of these points in a single visit, with no need to shut the plant down or bring in a cherry picker or scaffolding to reach the roof or the chimney duct.

What a drone inspects on a biomass boiler plant site

The boiler house roof and cladding are reviewed first with a thermal camera: a thermal bridge, a failing waterproofing membrane or a degraded insulation area can be spotted in a few minutes of flight, with no scaffolding needed. A literature review published in 2026 in the journal Energies highlights the growing interest in drone-mounted infrared thermography for the quantitative and qualitative assessment of building energy performance (see the study on Google Scholar), a method that transfers just as well to a boiler house as to any industrial warehouse.

The flue chimney gets a dedicated pass: cracks in the masonry or the metal duct, corrosion, the condition of the cap and its anchors, much like any industrial chimney drone inspection. Where the steam or superheated-water network leaves the building under lagging, an additional thermal pass can pinpoint a localised heat loss, on the same principle as an insulation inspection on a factory steam network. The ICPE regulatory framework: combustion and storage

A biomass boiler plant with a thermal capacity of 1 MW or more falls under rubrique 2910-A of the French classified installations nomenclature (ICPE), which governs combustion installations burning standard fuels or biomass. The applicable regime depends on total capacity: declaration between 1 and 20 MW under the prescriptions of the decree of 3 August 2018, registration between 20 and 50 MW, and authorisation above that. The silo or storage yard holding the wood fuel itself usually falls under rubrique 1532-2 (storage of wood or similar combustible materials), under the registration regime set by the decree of 11 September 2013 once the stored volume exceeds the threshold set by the nomenclature.

Both rubriques require regular checks on the installation and, under many prefectural orders, visual or thermal monitoring of the stockpile to prevent any self-heating outbreak. The drone flight itself remains subject to ordinary aviation law: open category A2 or A3 depending on distance to third parties for an isolated site, specific category with prior declaration as soon as the site sits in a built-up area or near an aerodrome. As with any professional mission, drone liability insurance covers the operator during the flight.

How the mission works

The typical mission is scheduled before the heating season, alongside the annual regulatory inspection of the installation, or after a major maintenance job on the boiler or the chimney. It combines a high-resolution visual pass over the roof, cladding and chimney with a thermal pass at the most favourable times: early morning or evening, when the temperature gap between the heated interior and the outside air is greatest, which sharpens the thermal contrast of any defect. If the site combines storage and a combustion unit, both parts are carried out on the same flight to limit the number of visits.

For a sensitive site that wants continuous monitoring rather than a one-off inspection - during a period of elevated fire risk on the stockpile, for instance - a tethered drone connected to the ground by a cable can provide extended thermal surveillance with no battery-life limit. The deliverable includes an annotated photo and thermal report, geolocated point by point, that the operator can use directly or pass on to its inspection body to support the ICPE compliance file.

Frequently asked questions about biomass boiler plant drone inspection

Can a drone inspect the inside of the boiler? No: a standard drone only operates outdoors (roof, cladding, chimney, silo). The inside of a boiler or a furnace requires a specific non-destructive testing method, outside GPS coverage and often in a confined space.

Does the plant need to shut down during the inspection? No, in the vast majority of cases: the mission is carried out while the plant runs normally, which actually makes it easier to see thermal losses and hot spots on the chimney.

How often should an inspection be scheduled? Once a year is common practice, ideally before the heating season, alongside the regular ICPE compliance checks; a high-stakes site (a large district heating network, a sizeable stockpile) can justify two passes a year.
