Flying a Drone Near a Railway Line in France: the 30 m Rule, Coordination with the Infrastructure Manager, and Prices
A road-viaduct construction site running alongside an operating SNCF line, a farm crossed by a single track, a corporate shoot planned a few metres from a station platform : as soon as a drone mission comes near a railway line open to traffic, a precise rule applies, whatever the mission is for — photography, construction monitoring, a survey or an inspection of the infrastructure itself. Here is exactly what the rule says, who to coordinate with to fly closer, and what it changes for the price of a mission.

The 30 m rule, and why it applies even in the open category
French national regulation on the use of airspace by unmanned aircraft — carried over from the decree of 17 December 2015 (article 3.7.8 of annex III) and continued since by the decree of 3 December 2020 on the use of airspace by unmanned aircraft — sets a simple rule: a drone must not operate at a horizontal distance of less than 30 m from a railway line open to rail traffic, except with prior coordination between the drone operator and the manager of the line concerned. This constraint protects both the railway operation — signalling, overhead contact line, trackside staff — and the flight itself, which risks losing control above an infrastructure carrying live traffic.
It applies regardless of the flight category: whether a mission stays in the open category (sub-category A1, A2 or A3 — see our guide to the open versus specific category) or moves into the specific category for an extended flight along the track, the 30 m distance remains the first thing to check before setting a date. On the ground, this benchmark is often more restrictive than the 120 m ceiling covered in our guide to maximum altitude and the obstacle exemption: a railway line frequently crosses a site across its full width, leaving little room to stay clear of the 30 m corridor without giving up part of the area to cover.
Who to coordinate with depending on the line, and lead times to plan for
The "line manager" varies by type of line. On the national rail network, SNCF Réseau holds that role; its subsidiary Altametris, dedicated to drone use for network maintenance and monitoring, runs its own operations but is not automatically the contact for a third party requesting one-off coordination — the request most often goes through SNCF Réseau's regional services or through the project owner when a construction site sits next to the infrastructure. On a tramway or an elevated metro, the network operator (RATP, a local transport authority, a public-service delegate) holds that role; on a private heritage or industrial line, it is the concession holder.
Either way, this coordination is arranged before the quote, not the day before the flight: the request states the section concerned (the start and end trackside markers), the desired time window and the reason for the mission; on some sites the manager may require a certified railway safety officer to be present during the flight. It follows a logic close to that of a BVLOS file under the STS-02 scenario, which precisely covers linear inspection of power lines, railways and pipelines beyond visual line of sight — with lead times running to several weeks when an extended flight along the track is needed, against a few days for a single one-off crossing outside the 30 m corridor.
Professional missions affected, beyond railway inspection itself
The 30 m rule affects far more missions than railway infrastructure inspection alone — already covered in our guide to railway track inspection by drone. It applies as soon as a mission commissioned for an entirely different purpose takes place near an operating line: construction monitoring of a structure or a housing development running alongside an SNCF right-of-way, a survey of farmland or an industrial plot crossed by a track, a corporate or real-estate shoot near a station, or earthworks-site surveillance close to a railway embankment.
The topic matters more as railway operators themselves scale up drone use for network monitoring: a literature review by Peyman Aela, Hung-Lin Chi, Ammar Fares, Tarek Zayed and Moonyoung Kim, published in 2024 in Automation in Construction, gives a comprehensive overview of drone use on railway tracks, bridges and tunnels — aircraft types, sensors (imaging, LiDAR, infrared thermography) and the regulatory framework specific to this environment (see the study on Google Scholar). The authors note that regulation specific to the trackside remains one of the most cited obstacles for operators, alongside sensor and endurance limits — a finding that speaks directly to what a third-party contractor must plan for ahead of any mission near a line, whether inspecting the infrastructure itself or a neighbouring site.
Method and price of a mission near a railway line
In practice, three scenarios come up :
- The flight plan stays more than 30 m from the track: no coordination is required under this rule; the mission is scheduled like any standard service, subject to the usual other constraints (airspace zone, height, third parties on the ground).
- Part of the flight needs to come within 30 m or cross the track: written coordination with the manager is required before the flight, even for a brief pass; lead time runs from a few days to several weeks depending on how responsive the manager is and how complex the site is.
- The mission follows the track over a long distance beyond visual line of sight: it falls under a specific-category file (STS-02 scenario or a dedicated SORA study), with processing times of several weeks.
