Facade cleaning by drone: spraying, buildings and cladding, price

After roofs, facades: the spraying drone, already established in roof moss removal, is now taking on walls. Algae staining on a north-facing render, atmospheric grime on a business park's cladding, an apartment building gable unreachable without scaffolding: on all these jobs the question is not so much the cleaning itself as the cost of access — scaffolding erected for two days' work, a lift that cannot reach the back of the building, rope technicians to mobilise. The drone applies treatment products and low-pressure rinsing from the air, fed from the ground, without touching the structure. Here is what drone facade cleaning can (and cannot) do, the regulatory framework, and 2026 pricing.

How a facade cleaning drone works

The principle is the agricultural spraying drone adapted to buildings: the aircraft carries a boom or nozzle aimed at the wall, fed by a hose from a tank and pump on the ground — so the drone does not carry the product's weight, only the hose. It sweeps the facade in regular horizontal passes at constant distance and applies, depending on the job, an anti-algae and anti-moss treatment (which works over the following weeks, as on roofs), low-pressure cleaning with a product suited to the substrate, or a protective water repellent. Drones' ability to work precisely against a vertical wall is validated by robotics research: a team from ETH Zurich and Disney Research presented in 2018 in IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters the PaintCopter system, a tethered drone able to spray paint onto 3D surfaces following a centimetre-planned trajectory (Vempati, Kamel, Stilinovic, Zhang, Reusser, Sa, Nieto, Siegwart and Beardsley; see the study on Google Scholar). Facade cleaning is its jobsite application: less demanding than painting in precision, it benefits from the same wall-following control techniques.

What the drone handles well, and what stays with rope access

The drone excels on ordinary surfaces and biological soiling: greened renders and coatings, metal or composite cladding on industrial and commercial buildings, blind gables, parapets — at several hundred square metres a day with zero contact on the facade. It is especially relevant when access is the dominant cost: relatively tall buildings (4 to 9 storeys), building rears without lift access, apartment buildings wanting to avoid full scaffolding for a simple treatment.

Its limits are clear: no mechanical brushing or high-pressure contact work (graffiti, black crusts embedded in dressed stone), no repair work (repointing, render patching), and particular caution on fragile or listed substrates — monument cleaning remains specialist work, as our heritage inspection guide illustrates. The right reflex: a prior drone facade inspection to qualify the substrate and choose the method — sometimes the conclusion will be that rope access is needed, and better to know beforehand.

Regulations: products, neighbours and public space

Two sets of rules overlap. On the aviation side, a facade usually faces a street or neighbouring plots: urban flight with a prior notification or an appropriate scenario, a ground safety perimeter during the passes (pavement closed off, as for a lift), and management of overflight of neighbouring properties — consent from directly overflown neighbours simplifies everything. On the product side, the biocides used follow the same rules as from the ground: labelling, dosage, protection of bystanders and the environment — spray drift is managed through nozzle choice, distance to the wall and wind, with a stricter cancellation threshold than aerial photography (see our drone and weather guide).

Note: unlike agricultural spraying, facade treatment does not fall under the general ban on aerial spraying of plant protection products, which targets crops — but local bylaws and departmental health regulations can frame cleaning operations in urban areas. A serious contractor, insured for this specific activity, checks these points before quoting.

The price of drone facade cleaning in 2026

Pricing works per square metre of treated facade, with a mobilisation minimum. Orders of magnitude observed in France in 2026:

The comparison speaks for itself: scaffolding commonly bills at €15 to €25/m² before any work, and a lift €300 to €600 a day with its access constraints. As soon as the facade exceeds two storeys and the job is limited to a treatment or gentle clean, the drone cuts the total cost by two to three — the same economics as roof moss removal. Frequently asked questions about drone facade cleaning

Can the drone remove graffiti? No: graffiti removal requires mechanical or chemical action on contact, beyond the reach of remote spraying. That is a rope-access or lift job.

Is the result immediate? For an anti-algae treatment, no: as on roofs, the product works over several weeks and the facade lightens gradually. Low-pressure cleaning, on the other hand, shows immediately.

Do windows need covering? Joinery and glazing tolerate the usual products, and rinsing is included; vehicles at the foot of the facade, however, must be moved and the ground perimeter closed off.

Can an apartment building's owners vote for drone cleaning? Yes, like any maintenance service: the quote must specify products, method, the contractor's insurance and overflight management — the same checks as for any standard drone service.
