Footbridge and cycle-bridge inspection by drone: structure, bearings, price
Footbridges and cycle bridges are multiplying in local authorities — river, railway and ring-road crossings, cycle links. Often slender, sometimes old, they fall under the duty to monitor engineering structures, but conventional inspection struggles with the soffit above water or traffic. The drone circles them without a lift or a closure: cables, decks, bearings, soffit and abutments are photographed close up and defects located on a drawing. It is a high-throughput monitoring pass that then targets heavy means. Here is the method, its limits and the prices.

What the drone reaches on a footbridge
The drone documents the zones unreachable from the deck: soffit and beam webs, bearings and deck ends at the abutments, anchorages and cables of a cable-stayed or suspended footbridge, cornices and parapets seen from outside. It spots corrosion, cracking, concrete spalling, waterproofing defects, paint failure and deformation. Each anomaly is located on the structure and ranked, feeding the maintenance record.
The effectiveness of drone bridge inspection is well supported: work by Seo and colleagues, carried out for the US Forest Service and published in 2018, evaluated drone bridge inspection and concluded that it achieves defect-identification quality comparable to conventional inspection, at lower cost and with markedly improved access to difficult areas (see the study on Google Scholar). The approach is the same on a footbridge, with the advantage of an often smaller, clearer structure.
No closure, over water or traffic
The decisive benefit is avoiding an under-bridge lift or a closure: on a river, railway or road crossing, conventional access is costly and disruptive, when not dangerous. The drone works from the banks or the deck, away from users, and covers the structure in one to two hours for a typical footbridge. The manager gains more frequent monitoring at constant budget, hence better early detection.

Flight framework: railway, road, watercourse
The context dictates the preparation. Over a railway, the mission is coordinated with the infrastructure manager and respects the land limits; over a trafficked road, direct overflight of vehicles is avoided and slots are framed; in a built-up area, preparation is that of a populated-zone flight. As many footbridges are in town or near sensitive infrastructure, prior regulatory scoping is systematic.
Technically, soffit inspection requires a drone able to aim upwards and hold a stable position near the structure; current sensors resolve fine cracking at short range. A 3D model of the structure, built once, eases the location and tracking of defects from one inspection to the next.
