Retaining wall drone inspection: method, monitoring, price
Every hillside municipality owns them without always having listed them: walls holding up a corniche road, walls along sloping streets, quaysides, terraced cemetery and public garden walls. These structures, often a century old, in masonry or concrete, work in silence — until the bulge accelerates, the drain blocks, or the collapse cuts a road or threatens a house below. France's national inventory drive under the Programme national Ponts, which covers small municipalities' bridges and walls, put numbers on the intuition: this heritage is vast, ageing and largely unknown. The drone gives managers an inspection method suited to these thankless structures — tall, long, with often inaccessible toes — and above all a way to track their deformation over time through photogrammetry. A huge, unknown heritage under municipal responsibility
The Programme national Ponts, run by Cerema for small municipalities, included retaining walls alongside bridges from the outset — for good reason: a wall holding up a road is an engineering structure in the same right, whose failure takes the road above and threatens what lies below. Yet these walls stack management handicaps: many appear in no inventory, ownership is sometimes uncertain — municipal wall or resident's wall? —, and inspecting them means reaching a face several metres high, often above private property, an embankment or a watercourse.
As a result, a baseline almost never exists, and the manager discovers the problem when a resident reports a belly in the wall. The logic of drone inspection is the same as for municipal road condition surveys: building a dated, exhaustive, comparable record over the whole length.
What the drone documents on a wall face
The drone tracks along the face at constant distance and photographs in high resolution what no inspection from crest or toe can capture: cracking (vertical, stepped through masonry joints, horizontal at the base — the most worrying), bulging and out-of-plumb, loosened or spalled stones, washed-out joints, vegetation rooted in the face — a major degradation factor —, and the state of weep holes and drainage outlets: blocked drains signal hydraulic loading behind the wall, the prime cause of distress. The crest, the barrier above and the toe complete the survey.
Quantifying defects from drone images is charted territory: a study by Andrew Ellenberg, Antonios Kontsos, Franklin Moon and Ivan Bartoli published in 2016 in Structural Control and Health Monitoring demonstrated drone imagery's ability to detect and measure structural defects — cracks, delaminations, deformations — with manager-grade accuracy (see the study on Google Scholar); the approach transfers line for line to retaining walls, cousins of bridges and engineering structures.
Photogrammetry: tracking the bulge over time
The real question about a bulging wall is not "is it deformed?" — it often has been for decades — but "is the deformation evolving?". This is where the drone goes beyond visual inspection: the photogrammetric flight produces a 3D model of the face, and comparing two models a year apart maps the change — a stable bulge is watched, a bulge progressing by several centimetres triggers the geotechnical study and, if needed, protective measures.
This point-cloud comparison logic is the one we detail for landslide monitoring, of which retaining walls are often the first built witnesses: a pushing wall tells the story of the slope behind it. After an exceptional rainfall event or an earthquake, the same protocol delivers an emergency differential picture of the whole stock.
Municipal campaign: list, rank, programme
At municipal scale, the mission runs as a tour: prior listing from plans and reports, inspection of each structure — a few dozen minutes per wall —, individual report with a condition class, and a summary table ranking the stock: walls to repair, walls to monitor with periodic reflights, sound walls. This ranking substantiates grant applications and fits the existing support schemes for small municipalities.
The drone works from public space or with the consent of overflown residents, without closing the road or erecting scaffolding; in built-up areas the flight follows the rules of our flying in cities guide.
