Riverbank and watercourse monitoring by drone: erosion, log jams, price
Since 2018, aquatic environment management and flood prevention — the French GEMAPI mandate — has fallen to inter-municipal authorities, often acting through river syndicates. On the ground, that means hundreds of kilometres of watercourses to know and monitor: retreating banks, log jams forming after every spate, declining riparian forest, sediment bars shifting the channel. Walking surveys see one bank at a time, and the most active reaches are often the least accessible. Drones change the economics of this monitoring: in one morning they cover several kilometres of channel, produce orthophotos comparable from one campaign to the next, and quantify bank retreat. Here are the use cases, the method and prices observed in 2026.

The mandate on the ground: knowing your reaches to act in the right place
The GEMAPI mandate covers watercourse maintenance and management, flood defence and environmental restoration. Routine upkeep of bed and banks legally rests with riparian owners, but in practice the authority diagnoses, programmes and intervenes where the public interest justifies it — through public-interest declarations and multi-year management plans. These programmes are worth what the knowledge of the reaches is worth: where exactly are banks retreating? Where do log jams threaten a bridge or a campsite? Which stretch of riparian forest to treat first?
The drone answers at the missing scale: broader than a walking survey, finer and fresher than the departmental orthophoto. It complements the approaches we describe for wetlands and for levees and dams — the structures side of the same mandate.
Bank erosion: measuring retreat, not guessing it
The heart of the added value is repeatability: by flying the same reaches months or years apart, photogrammetry overlays orthophotos and terrain models and measures bank-top retreat to the decimetre. A study by Sander Hemmelder, Wouter Marra, Henk Markies and Steven de Jong, published in 2018 in the International Journal of Applied Earth Observation and Geoinformation, demonstrated exactly this on a French river — the Buëch, in the Hautes-Alpes — quantifying bank erosion and channel change between two drone campaigns (see the study on Google Scholar).
For the authority, that number changes decisions: three metres of retreat over two floods justifies protection works or land acquisition, a stable bank can wait. Log jams, riparian forest, gravel bars: the aerial patrol
After every flood episode the question is the same: where are the log jams? A low-altitude reconnaissance flight locates in one morning the deadwood accumulations, the leaning trees about to fall, the undermined bank protections and the gravel bars deflecting the current onto a fragile bank — both banks at once, including reaches with no access. Every point is geolocated and photographed: the river team receives a prioritised intervention map instead of scattered reports.
On the riparian forest, late-spring aerial images reveal the gaps and dieback hotspots — ash dieback in particular — that prepare tomorrow's log jams; the multispectral approaches described in our forestry by drone guide apply to riverside strips. Regulations: flying over valleys, not people
Watercourses cross every airspace regime: open-category countryside, urban crossings under regulated scenarios, protected natural areas — some reaches run along reserves where overflight is restricted, to be checked as we detail for mountains and natural parks. Flying along the water, beyond visual line of sight past a few hundred metres, is planned in segments with take-over points; long missions can justify the regimes we describe in our BVLOS flight guide.
Wildlife imposes its windows: bank-nesting sectors (sand martins, bee-eaters) are avoided in spring, as are low passes over heronries. Prices observed in 2026
Ranges observed in 2026 (excl. VAT):
- Reconnaissance patrol (video + geolocated photos, intervention point map): €600 to €1,200 per half-day, typically 3 to 6 km of channel depending on access.
- Corridor orthophoto (100–200 m wide strip, 2–3 cm GSD): €250 to €500 per kilometre, tapering beyond 10 km.
- Erosion monitoring (repeated photogrammetry, retreat computed between campaigns): €800 to €1,800 per campaign per priority reach.
- Emergency post-flood flight (mobilised within 48 h): 20–40% surcharge.
Most river authorities pool: one scheduled annual campaign on priority reaches, plus post-flood flights on demand. Request a quote stating the length of channel, priority reaches and intended frequency.
