Industrial site perimeter fence inspection by drone: security audit, price
A classified industrial site, a logistics depot or a solar farm often stretches over several kilometres of perimeter fencing. A fixed camera only covers a corridor a few dozen metres wide, and a foot patrol, costly in guard hours, can in practice only cover a fraction of the fence line at spaced-out intervals. The result: mesh bent by a fallen tree, a breach cut with pliers, subsidence under the fence, or vegetation that has made a whole section ineffective can go unnoticed for weeks. A drone flies the entire fence line in a few dozen minutes, with a camera that never blinks and an optional thermal pass for night-time detection. Here is the method, what it brings over a classic patrol, the applicable flight framework and the prices observed in 2026.

The blind spot left by foot patrols and fixed cameras
A fixed CCTV camera, however capable, only covers a static field of view: beyond a few dozen metres, its resolution can no longer tell a sagging fence panel from a cast shadow, and a single clump of shrubs is enough to create a permanent blind spot. A foot or vehicle patrol, meanwhile, costs security-guard hours and cannot physically cover several kilometres of fence line several times a day: in practice, a given isolated stretch is often inspected visually only once or twice a month.
That gap matters for sites under a regulatory fencing obligation: a French ministerial order of 10 May 2000, as amended, applicable to Seveso establishments, requires a fence or equivalent device around the entire perimeter, at least two metres high. Other sector-specific orders impose a comparable obligation for certain classified-installation categories (warehouses, silos, hazardous-substance storage). An undetected fencing defect therefore exposes the operator to a regulatory breach as much as to a risk of intrusion, equipment theft or accident.
The method: a visible-light flight line, with an optional thermal pass
The pilot plans a flight that follows the fence line at low altitude and a constant distance, typically five to fifteen metres depending on surrounding vegetation, with the camera angled towards the mesh. The images, taken continuously or with successive overlap, are then stitched into a linear panorama of the whole perimeter: torn or bent mesh, leaning posts, slack fence tension, damaged gates and secondary access points, and vegetation that has taken over a section and reduced the physical barrier's effectiveness.
A complementary thermal-camera pass, flown at night or early morning, reveals recent crossing points: an area of trampled ground or grass keeps a thermal contrast for a few hours after someone has walked through it, and a human presence can be detected several hundred metres away even in complete darkness. A study by Lim, Jin and Bang published in 2023 in Scientific Reports (Nature) demonstrates the value of pairing drone-mounted thermal imagery with deep learning for anomaly detection on sensitive industrial sites, with YOLO-type models achieving high detection accuracy on complex installations (see the study on Google Scholar). The same principle applies to fence-image analysis: automated processing spots visual anomalies across kilometres of imagery far faster than a manual review.
A geolocated report, useful to the site operator and the insurer alike
Every anomaly found is geolocated and classified by type and severity in a report: a breach to repair urgently, a sagging fence panel to keep an eye on, vegetation to clear, a post to reinforce. This precise referencing replaces a subjective impression ("the fence is broadly in good condition") with a prioritised list that doubles as a work order for the maintenance or fencing contractor, and puts a real figure on the repair budget to request internally.

Compared over time, a history of flights also tracks how an identified weak point evolves — a section gradually sinking under the pressure of an embankment, for example.
Flight framework and 2026 pricing
The flight usually falls under the open category, but the precise classification depends on the site's surroundings: in subcategory A3, the drone must operate far from any third party and at least 150 metres from residential, commercial, industrial or recreational areas other than the operation's own site — a constraint that in practice rules out many industrial sites located in dense business parks, close to other warehouses or main roads. In that case, the flight moves to subcategory A2 (certified drone, reduced distance to uninvolved third parties) or the specific category if the site borders a sensitive zone. Checking restricted zones beforehand on the Géoportail map remains essential, particularly near an aerodrome or a prison facility. A night flight for the thermal pass always requires the specific category.
