Industrial site surveillance by autonomous drone: how it works, regulations and price
On a logistics warehouse, a quarry or an industrial platform spanning several hectares, traditional guard patrols always leave blind spots between two rounds. A new generation of solutions pairs an autonomous charging station with a drone that patrols on its own, day and night, and takes off within seconds as soon as an alarm triggers. Here is how this setup works, what regulatory framework it falls under since 2026, and what it costs.

Why traditional guarding is reaching its limits on large sites
A 30,000 m² logistics warehouse, an open-pit quarry, an industrial platform with several buildings and a large outdoor car park: on sites this size, traditional guard patrols quickly show their limits. A guard covers a perimeter of several kilometres on foot or by vehicle, several times a night, without being able to cover the whole site continuously — between two rounds, an intrusion, a fire outbreak or equipment theft can go unnoticed for long minutes.
The cost of night-time human guarding is heavy: a 24/7 security post requires several guards working in rotation, and the most remote areas of a site (outdoor storage, roofs, perimeter fencing) often end up the least watched for lack of time. This limitation is pushing a growing number of industrial sites, logistics platforms and quarries to adopt an automated aerial patrol solution, alongside — not instead of — their existing security setup.
How an autonomous drone surveillance solution works
An autonomous drone surveillance solution is built around a fixed charging station installed on site: the drone parks there, recharges between missions and takes off automatically according to a predefined patrol schedule (for example every hour at night, or at set times outside opening hours). Each patrol follows a recorded flight plan, covers the site's sensitive points (fences, outdoor storage areas, vehicle access, roofs) and returns on its own to land and recharge on its station.
Alongside scheduled patrols, the drone can also be triggered on demand: as soon as a perimeter alarm or a fixed camera detects suspicious movement, it takes off within seconds to carry out an aerial assessment — a far faster and more complete overview than a guard who has to walk to the area concerned. Footage is streamed live to the security post or the responsible remote pilot, who remains able to take manual control of the flight if needed: in the specific category, a drone flying beyond visual line of sight stays under the responsibility of a remote pilot, even when take-off and navigation are automated.
The regulatory framework: specific category, STS-01 and STS-02
A night flight that is automated and beyond the remote pilot's visual line of sight (BVLOS) does not fall under the open category, which requires keeping the drone in sight and bans this kind of recurring operation. These missions fall under the specific category, governed since 1 January 2026 by the European standard scenarios STS-01 and STS-02, which have permanently replaced the former French national scenarios S1 to S4.
STS-01 covers visual-line-of-sight (VLOS) flights over a controlled ground area, including in populated environments, using a C5-class drone. STS-02, better suited to automated out-of-sight surveillance, covers BVLOS flights with ground observers, over a sparsely populated area, using a C6-class drone: the drone can then range up to 1 km from the remote pilot without an intermediate observer, provided flight visibility is at least 5 km. Meeting these conditions is declared to the DGAC, without going through an individual operational authorisation — a lighter administrative burden than a bespoke specific scenario.
On top of that come the obligations common to any professional flight: operator registered on AlphaTango, drone registration above 250 g, mandatory electronic identification beacon from 800 g, and a systematic check of local restrictions on the Géoportail map (proximity to an airfield, military zone). What the drone adds beyond a standard guard round
Deterrence remains the first benefit: a drone that automatically takes off as soon as an alarm triggers, spotlight and sometimes an audible signal on, ends an intrusion far faster than a guard who still has to cover several hundred metres on foot. Fitted with a thermal camera, it spots a person hidden in the dark or behind an obstacle, where a standard fixed camera loses all readability once site lighting is insufficient.
Integration with the existing video-protection system lets you cross-reference alerts (fixed cameras, perimeter detectors, drone) and keep a full history of patrols and assessments — useful traceability in the event of a claim or dispute, to attach to the file sent to the insurer (see our guide to professional drone liability insurance). This setup does not replace a human security post: it extends its reach, reserving a guard's physical deployment for situations where the aerial assessment confirms a real risk. The price of a drone surveillance solution in 2026
The price of an autonomous drone surveillance solution mainly depends on the size of the site, the number of charging stations needed to cover it, and the level of integration required with existing security systems. Orders of magnitude observed in France in 2026:

For comparison, a one-off construction-site surveillance mission is usually billed per shift or as a weekly package: the autonomous solution only makes economic sense on a continuously operating site, where the volume of patrols needed over time far exceeds what an external provider can deliver shift by shift. Frequently asked questions about industrial site drone surveillance
Can a surveillance drone fly all night with no remote pilot present? No: even in automated out-of-sight flight, a remote pilot remains responsible for the mission and can take back control at any time — they typically supervise several sites remotely from a centralised post rather than being physically present at each one.
What about the privacy of nearby residents? Flight plans and camera fields of view must stay confined to the site's perimeter; any footage that could identify nearby residents or neighbouring properties must be avoided or blurred, just as for any professional flight.
Does the drone replace security guards? No, it complements the setup: it multiplies how often rounds happen and speeds up assessments, but physical intervention is still handled by human guards or law enforcement.
What happens in bad weather? Like any drone flight, patrols are suspended in strong wind, heavy rain or fog; the site then falls back on its backup security setup (fixed video protection, a physical guard).
