Drone Inspection of Marquees, Tents and Temporary Structures (CTS): Regulations and Price
An exhibition marquee, a reception tent or an inflatable structure erected for a trade show is not just fabric stretched over poles: it is a full establishment open to the public, subject to its own fire-safety regulation and a mandatory check before every opening. That framework — the CTS category — is distinct from the one covering temporary grandstands and bleachers, with its own legal texts, its own approved inspection body and its own points of vigilance: poles, guy-wires, ground anchors, fabric tension. Here is what a drone genuinely adds alongside the mandatory check, the method, the flight's regulatory framework and the 2026 prices (excl. VAT).

A full public venue in its own right: the CTS framework
A circus big top, a large wedding reception tent, an inflatable structure at a trade show: as soon as a stretched fabric envelope, closed or able to be closed, covering 16 m² or more, hosts the public for a show, a meeting, a dance, a banquet or a sporting activity, it falls under the CTS category (chapiteaux, tentes et structures itinérants — marquees, tents and itinerant structures) of the fire-safety regulation for establishments open to the public. This framework, set by the order of 23 January 1985 and supplemented by that of 18 February 2010, is distinct from the one governing demountable grandstands and bleachers — covered in our guide to drone inspection of temporary grandstands and bleachers — even though both categories share the same logic: a structure assembled in a few days and loaded within hours by several thousand people must be checked before every use.
Before any opening to the public, the operator must have the structure checked by a Type A accredited inspection body under standard NF ISO/IEC 17020, and keep a safety register specific to the venue: electrical installation drawings, the manufacturer's assembly notice, and above all the maximum wind speed beyond which the public must be evacuated — a threshold set case by case for each structure, generally well below its nominal design resistance (typically around 100 km/h combined with a snow load, per the manufacturers' construction standards). That regulatory check remains the cornerstone of the safety system: no drone service replaces it.
What a drone adds alongside the mandatory check
The approved body's check covers the structure's compliance with its technical notice and the safety regulation. A drone is not meant to replace it, but it documents what the eye struggles to catch from the ground on a large structure: an orthogonal overview of the ground anchors (concrete blocks, ballast bags or stakes, depending on the ground type), a check of the guy-wires along the full height of a central pole — often out of reach without a cherry picker on a large exhibition or circus marquee —, and the general condition of the roof fabric: tears, a sagging ridge line, water pooling after rain.
Measuring the tension of a stretched fabric envelope through aerial imagery is not a new idea: a study by Wern Hann Ong, Wing Kong Chiu, Thomas Kuen and Jayantha Kodikara, published in 2017 in Sensors, validated a UAV photogrammetry method for determining the strain state of large flexible covers, in that case large floating pond covers — an approach directly transferable to a marquee's fabric roof, where an abnormally slack area or an asymmetric deformation of the ridge line flags a fault worth checking before it worsens (see the study on Google Scholar). On the structural side, a study by Feng Yuan, Xiaoshen Ren, Rong Pan and co-authors, published in 2023 in Experimental Mechanics, combined UAV close-range photogrammetry with stereo digital image correlation to continuously track cable tension in a tensile structure during its assembly and through a progressive collapse test — a method showing that drone-based tracking of the tensile elements (cables, guy-wires, poles) of a large temporary structure is an active and operational research field (see the study on Google Scholar).
Method: three flight windows around assembly
The mission is organised around three flight windows, all with no public present. Before assembly: a light ground survey spots waterlogged or sloped areas that would complicate placing the anchors. During assembly: one or two intermediate passes — on the same principle as a standard drone construction monitoring mission — check the fabric's progressive tensioning as the poles are raised. Once the structure is finished, before the public arrives: a full photogrammetric survey (constant-height orbit, oblique passes on each face) documents all the anchors and guy-wires, and a targeted thermal scan of the fabric-to-structure joints spots an early water infiltration under the seams.
A final pass, at teardown, documents the condition of the fabric and structure before they are transported to another site — useful for rental companies that rotate the same stock of marquees across several events a year, on the same logic as an annual multi-site drone contract. Flight rules: never over the public
As with any event structure, the single most important point comes down to one sentence: flying over assemblies of people is prohibited, whatever the flight sub-category. In built-up areas, the mission still requires a prior declaration to the préfecture (cerfa 15476*04, ten working days' notice since 1 January 2026) — a lead time to build into a trade show or fair's preparation schedule rather than handle at the last minute. The pilot systematically coordinates with the event organiser, the structure's rigger and the accredited inspection body: the images and 3D model the drone produces can usefully add to the safety register submitted to that body, never replace it.
Price of a drone mission on a marquee, tent or structure in 2026
The price depends on the structure's surface area and height, the number of passes and whether thermal imaging is included. Orders of magnitude observed in France in 2026:

Does the drone replace the mandatory check by the approved inspection body?
