Drones in orchards: tree counts, blossom, frost, canopy volumes — price

Fruit growing is precision agriculture by nature: each tree is capital planted for fifteen or thirty years, managed individually, and the year's income plays out over a few weeks — blossom, fruit set, frost episodes. It is also a three-dimensional crop that satellite imagery reads poorly: grassed alleys, overlapping crowns, hail nets. The drone sees every tree. Gap counts, row-by-row vigour maps, blossom load estimates, frost or hail damage assessment, canopy volumes to adjust spraying: here is what aerial imagery concretely brings to the orchard, with the right sensors and prices observed in 2026.

Seeing the orchard tree by tree

The first deliverable is an individual inventory: from a photogrammetric flight, each tree is detected, positioned and measured — height, crown diameter and volume. A study by Jorge Torres-Sánchez, Francisca López-Granados and co-authors, published in 2015 in PLoS One, validated this "high-throughput" 3D monitoring of tree plantations by drone, automatically quantifying the geometry of thousands of trees (see the study on Google Scholar).

In practice, the grower gets an exact count of trees and gaps — precious when ordering replacement stock or negotiating an orchard takeover —, row-by-row vigour maps revealing difficult soil patches or failing irrigation, and an objective baseline to track young plantations. Blossom, frost, hail: the weeks when everything is decided

In spring, closely spaced flights document the blossom: the intensity and evenness of the floral load by zone guide thinning and give a first harvest forecast. Then comes the major risk: spring frost. After a frost night, a morning flight maps the apparent extent of damage by sector and variety — immediate information for redeploying protection on the following nights, and a dated record for the insurance or disaster-relief file, in the logic of our agricultural damage assessment guide.

The thermal camera adds a preventive capability: flying at night, it maps the orchard's cold-air pockets — low spots, slope breaks — and helps position frost towers, candles or sprinklers where they actually help. After hail, the same photographic protocols quantify damage to foliage and fruit, net by net.

Canopy volumes: spraying right

Orchard spraying is increasingly reasoned by vegetation volume rather than by hectare. And that volume is exactly what the drone's 3D model measures, row by row and stage by stage: enough to adjust doses and sprayer settings to the real canopy, reduce drift and document the approach — an argument that counts in integrated fruit production schemes and towards neighbours. Multispectral vigour maps complete the picture for modulating fertilisation and irrigation, as in broad-acre precision agriculture.

Flying conditions in the orchard and calendar

The orchard is easy flying territory — rural areas, open category in most cases — with two particularities. Hail nets first: you fly above them, current sensors reading vegetation correctly through open mesh, but fine diagnostics are best scheduled before nets close. Neighbours and beehives second: flights are announced to the neighbouring grower when plots touch, and hives in full activity are not overflown. A season's typical calendar: one inventory flight in winter (structure, gaps, sizes), one or two blossom flights, frost-alert flights on demand, one vigour flight in summer, one pre-harvest record. Each flight takes under an hour for a ten-hectare orchard — mobilisation, not area, drives the price.
