Transport pipeline right-of-way monitoring by drone: method, regulations, price
A buried gas pipeline is invisible from the road, yet its route crosses dozens of municipalities, forests, waterways and building sites that spring up without always knowing what runs beneath their machinery. For decades, transport pipeline operators — natural gas, hydrocarbons, chemical products — have monitored that route by aerial patrol, most often by low-altitude helicopter. Drones are steadily finding their place in that picture: cheaper per kilometre, more frequent, able to carry the thermal and multispectral sensors that catch an anomaly before it becomes an incident. Here is what French transport pipeline regulation requires, what a drone actually documents along the route, and prices observed in 2026.

What the law requires: the surveillance and maintenance programme
Transport pipelines carrying natural gas, hydrocarbons and chemical products fall under a specific regime of the French environmental code, distinct from the regulated-facility (ICPE) regime that governs fixed industrial sites — a point covered by our drone methane leak detection (LDAR) guide, which deals with fixed sites rather than a buried linear route. The order of 5 March 2014, known as the "multi-fluid order", requires every operator to run a surveillance and maintenance programme covering the whole structure over a reference period of up to ten years, built following the professional GESIP guide's methodology for drawing up such plans. That programme sets patrol frequency according to each section's sensitivity — densely populated areas, waterway crossings, wooded sectors hard to reach on foot.
The route is also encumbered with public-utility easements that restrict construction and third-party works near the pipeline. Periodic patrol exists precisely to check those easements are respected: earthworks, deep-rooted tree planting or material stockpiling within the easement strip are the kind of disorder a regular patrol catches before construction machinery damages the structure. These obligations weigh on operators with very extensive networks — natural gas transporters, operators of oil pipelines and of chemical-product lines linking petrochemical platforms — for whom the length to cover each year runs into hundreds, sometimes thousands, of kilometres.
What a drone documents along the route
A drone patrol mission layers several readings of the same corridor. Standard photo and video spot third-party works, new construction, bank erosion at waterway crossings and ground movement that can stress the pipeline — much like the mechanics described in our landslide monitoring guide, applied here to a linear right-of-way rather than a single site. Thermography reveals the surface-temperature anomalies that sometimes accompany a leak or active corrosion on the structure's above-ground sections (valves, sectioning stations).
For leak detection proper, research has documented several generations of drone-borne sensors: a review by Akande, Adetunla, Olanrewaju and Adeoye published in 2021 in the Journal of Robotics catalogues the approaches used on oil and gas pipelines — thermal imaging, tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy to trace methane, gas sensors coupled with vibration analysis — and their respective conditions for effectiveness (see the study on Google Scholar). In practice, an operator often combines several of these sensors in a single campaign rather than relying on just one, since each technology has its own blind spots.
A French precedent: GRTgaz and the first drone gas pipeline patrol
France has a concrete track record here: in May 2015, GRTgaz — which operates a network of more than 32,000 km of buried pipelines — launched with the company Air Marine the country's first drone gas-pipeline surveillance programme, on a hilly, wooded stretch near Brive that was hard to cover on foot and costly to treat by helicopter over short sequences. The programme targeted around 80 km of network overflown each month, under beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) conditions — a flight regime whose required authorisations our BVLOS, STS and SORA guide details.
That precedent opened the way: major linear-network operators now weigh drones as a complement to the helicopter rather than a full replacement — classic aerial patrol remains relevant over long, uniform stretches, while the drone wins out on hard-to-reach sections, sensitive zones needing more frequent passes, or one-off checks after a report. The same reasoning extends to oil pipeline operators and to the chemical-product lines that link petrochemical platforms, where the terrain crossed is often just as uneven and third-party encroachment just as hard to track from the ground. Observed prices in 2026
Ranges observed in 2026 (excl. VAT) for a drone pipeline patrol:
- Standard visual patrol (photo/video, spotting third-party works and erosion): €15 to €30 per linear kilometre, tapering over a continuous stretch.
- Thermographic campaign (temperature-anomaly detection, stations and valves included): €25 to €50 per kilometre depending on equipment density.
- Multi-sensor BVLOS campaign (thermal + gas detection, beyond-visual-line-of-sight authorisation included): a SORA preparation fee of €3,000 to €8,000 per authorised section, then a per-kilometre rate close to the thermographic patrol.
The unit cost drops markedly on a multi-year contract covering the whole network rather than an isolated stretch, since regulatory preparation and overflight authorisations are amortised over time. The typical client remains the network operator itself — its safety and asset-integrity department — but an engineering consultancy or environmental expert firm commissioned for a one-off diagnosis after an incident or ahead of an asset sale can just as well order a standalone campaign.
