Seabird colonies and drones: surveying a nesting colony without disturbing it, method and price
A cliff covered in nests, an islet cut off at high tide, a shingle beach where hundreds of terns incubate directly on the ground: surveying a colony of nesting seabirds has always been a delicate exercise. Approaching on foot or by boat to count risks triggering a mass flush that leaves eggs and chicks unprotected until the adults return; staying far enough away, conversely, makes it impossible to see an entire dense colony. Two recent scientific studies measured what a drone census actually changes: the reliability of the resulting figure, and the real disturbance caused to the birds. Here is what they show, the method to apply on site, the regulatory framework that almost always overlaps these sites, and prices observed in 2026.

The problem with ground counts: undercounting and disturbance
A study by Hodgson, Baylis, Mott, Herrod and Clarke, published in 2016 in Scientific Reports, compared ground counts with drone-derived counts of the same colonies of Crested Terns nesting on remote Australian islands in April 2014: ground counts recovered only around 90% of the numbers recorded on the aerial images (see the study on Google Scholar). The gap is not a reading error: a ground observer, forced to keep a safe distance to avoid disturbance, never sees an entire dense colony on a cliff or islet, whereas a vertical aerial image lays every individual out on one plane, countable afterwards, calmly, on a screen.
The second problem is disturbance itself. A seabird colony that flushes en masse as a boat or observer approaches is not just a failed count: every minute the adults are away exposes eggs to chilling or overheating depending on the season, and chicks to predators (gulls, corvids, birds of prey) that exploit the gap to enter the colony. That is precisely the risk a well-run drone protocol aims to reduce.
A study on gulls: reliable counts, minimal disturbance
On a colony of gulls, a study by Rush, Clarke, Stone and Wood, published in 2018 in Ecology and Evolution, tested a complete protocol: a flight at a sufficient altitude, followed by semi-automated image processing using a GIS classification tool. The result: a mean agreement of 98% with expert manual counts made from the same photographs, and a 99% correlation between the two methods (see the study on Google Scholar) — accuracy comparable to a manual count, obtained in a fraction of the time, without the birds having to tolerate a human observer's prolonged presence inside the colony. The authors observed neither mass flushing nor any nest abandonment during the flights.
This finding matches the practical recommendations of the Réseau ornithologique des oiseaux marins nicheurs (ROMN), a French naturalist network which, for a cliff colony survey, recommends a horizontal distance of 20 to 25 m with a small drone (under 2 kg), a gradual approach rather than a direct pass over the nests, and stopping the flight immediately at the first sign of collective stress: agitation, alarm calls, group flushing. These field rules, specific to each species and site, should be refined together with the manager or naturalist network that has monitored the colony over several seasons.
Timing, protection status and the limits of a drone
A colony of nesting seabirds is almost always on a site with a protection status: a national or regional nature reserve, a biotope protection order, a national park core zone, a marine nature park, a coastal Natura 2000 site. The nesting period varies by species and latitude, broadly from mid-April to the end of July on mainland French coasts, with a peak of sensitivity during incubation and the first few days after hatching: a flight should therefore be scheduled in close coordination with the site manager or the local naturalist network (LPO, ROMN, land trusts), who alone know the exact timing of the colony being monitored.
An honest caveat: a drone census gives a reliable count of nests or individuals, but does not always replace fine-grained species identification — on a mixed colony of gulls and terns seen from directly above, two closely related species can remain indistinguishable without a high-zoom sensor or a lower pass, and each option has a disturbance cost to weigh with the site manager.
