Roof Smoke Vents: Using a Drone to Support the Mandatory Annual Fire Safety Check
On the roof of a logistics warehouse, a shopping centre or an industrial workshop, dozens of unassuming domes or roof lights perform a vital function in a fire: venting smoke and hot gases to keep escape routes usable and help firefighters intervene. These smoke vents and natural smoke-extraction systems are subject to mandatory periodic verification, at least once a year, in premises open to the public as well as in ICPE-classified warehouses. On a large building, that check can cover dozens of units spread across the whole roof: a drone survey lets you quickly flag suspect areas before sending a technician up, without replacing the official verification itself. Here is why, what it can and cannot do, and current prices.

A legal requirement, in ERP premises and ICPE warehouses alike
In a premises open to the public (a shop, shopping centre, sports hall), smoke extraction falls under the fire safety code set by the amended order of 25 June 1980. Its article DF 10 requires a periodic verification at least once a year of smoke-extraction installations, carried out by a competent technician: the operation of manual and automatic controls, the actual operation of smoke-extraction louvres, vents, openings and fans, the closing of any moving compartmentation elements that take part in this function, and shutting off comfort ventilation during the test. An APSAD F4-certified provider, or one holding an equivalent recognised qualification, is commonly required by insurers to carry out this check and log the result in the premises' safety register; without an up-to-date verification, the operator risks findings from the safety commission, or even administrative closure in the most serious cases.
In a covered warehouse classified under rubrique 1510 of the nomenclature for installations classified for environmental protection (ICPE), the order of 11 April 2017 sets precise sizing rules: the total useful surface of the smoke vents cannot be less than 2% of the surface of each smoke-containment zone, with at least four vents for every 1,000 m² of roof, each unit having a surface of between 0.5 and 6 m², and the zones themselves capped at 1,650 m² and 60 m in length. This density of equipment, designed to clear smoke quickly from a storage fire, translates in practice into a large number of units to check every year on a roof that can span several tens of thousands of square metres — a verification task that ties into the same logic covered in our guide on workplace risk assessment (DUERP) and work at height.
What an aerial survey documents — and what it does not replace
A drone flown a few metres from the roof photographs every dome and roof light with enough resolution to catch the most common anomalies: a dome that has gone opaque or yellowed from UV exposure, cracked or brittle, obstructed by leaves, industrial dust or a solar panel installed too close, corrosion on the metal frame or hinges, a degraded seal and — a common finding reported by verification bodies — a vent blocked shut with a strap or a wedge added after installation, in direct contradiction with its function. This systematic survey, across dozens of units spread over the whole roof, takes a fraction of the time of a walk-round, while covering the entire installation, including the most remote and least-visited zones.
The reliability of visual recognition from drone imagery is backed by research: a 2025 study by Staffa Junior, Bastos Costa, Torres Nogueira and Silva in the International Journal of Building Pathology and Adaptation developed and tested a web platform combining drone imagery and artificial intelligence to automatically recognise roof pathologies, with a 77.08% recognition rate (see the study on Google Scholar). But the regulatory check under article DF 10 is not limited to the visual: it requires an actual triggering test of the manual and automatic controls, a real opening of every vent, and for mechanical systems, airflow and speed measurements — all operations a drone cannot carry out remotely. An aerial survey is therefore a screening and prioritisation tool ahead of the check, never a substitute for the verification signed off by the qualified technician.
On a large warehouse, the aerial survey also changes the safety equation
The standard check often requires a technician to move around in the immediate vicinity of the vents themselves — on a flat, steel-deck roof whose resistance to point loads is not always guaranteed, particularly near roof lights, well-known fragile spots where falling through a roof remains a serious and recurring workplace accident in France. An aerial survey beforehand makes it possible to target the zones that genuinely warrant a hands-on visit, rather than systematically walking the whole of a large surface — the same division of roles we cover in our guide on rooftop fall-arrest anchor lines, a service that is in fact often carried out in the same flight: waterproofing, fall-protection devices and smoke vents all fall under the same annual check of the same building.
This approach fits naturally alongside a drone roof inspection or an inspection of a warehouse or commercial roof. The flight is conducted under the open category in most cases, subject to checking the Géoportail restricted-zone map and holding up-to-date professional liability insurance.
