Strawberry and drone: field vigor, nursery verticillium screening, price
French strawberry stands on two quite separate legs. On one side, around 3,780 hectares of open-field fruit production — 77,200 tonnes in 2024, an estimated 70,200 tonnes for 2025 according to Agreste, driven by the South-West basin and the Fraise du Périgord PGI. On the other, a trade almost invisible to the public : plant production, concentrated on Sologne's sandy soils, where nurseries such as Angier International grow more than 60 hectares of mother-plant blocks and sell tens of millions of plants across Europe each year. Both industries dread the same silent adversary — verticillium wilt, a soil disease with no curative treatment — but they do not use a drone the same way: vigor and flowering-frost mapping in open fields on one side, varietal screening on mother-plant blocks in nurseries on the other.

Two distinct industries: South-West fruit and Sologne plants
According to Agreste's crop reports, French strawberry production reached 77,200 tonnes as of 1 September 2024 — 6% above the five-year average, driven by a South-West basin up 3% year-on-year — then 70,200 tonnes as of 1 September 2025, down 1,400 tonnes. Cultivated area follows a slow erosion: 3,780 hectares in 2024, down 2% year-on-year and 3% over five years. The South-West remains the reference basin, anchored by the Fraise du Périgord PGI, with a good share of early production grown under plastic tunnels to bring the harvest calendar forward — a point that matters later on, since an opaque tunnel cannot be mapped from the sky.
A far less visible industry nonetheless feeds the whole European market: strawberry plant production, concentrated on Sologne's sandy soils. The Angier International nursery, based in Soings-en-Sologne, grows more than 60 hectares of mother-plant blocks and sells around 18.5 million cold-stored bare-root plants each year, on top of fresh plants, plug plants and mini-plants — a quarter of its revenue going to export, notably to Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. This upstream link sells no fruit at all, only certified plant material : its whole value rests on the health and uniformity of the mother-plant blocks, a very different concern from a fruit grower's.
In the open field: mapping vigor and flowering frost
On open-field plots — outside tunnels, and therefore genuinely visible from a drone — regular multispectral mapping (NDVI, NDRE) tracks canopy vigor and flags declining areas before the symptom is visible on the ground. A 2026 US study published in the journal Drones by Jon R. Detka, Forrest S. Melton and Frank N. Martin followed nine UAV multispectral surveys, from December 2022 to June 2023, across three commercial strawberry fields in Oxnard, California — over 159,000 plant-level monitoring units. Combining a foliage redness index, NDRE and a statistical survival model, the team ranked plants by decline risk with concordance indices of 0.88 to 0.95 — a method showing that repeated drone monitoring over time catches canopy decline before it is visible to the eye, not just in a single snapshot (see the study on Google Scholar).
Strawberry also shares with grapevine and orchard fruit an acute vulnerability to flowering frost: a single frosty night during flowering can destroy much of the harvest potential, which pushes many growers to install overhead sprinkler frost protection. In the nursery: screening mother plants for verticillium resistance
For a nursery, the stakes are not a fruit to harvest but a certified healthy plant to deliver. Verticillium wilt (Verticillium dahliae), a soil-borne fungus with no curative treatment approved on strawberry, is one of the most feared threats on a mother-plant block: an undetected outbreak spreads through the runners and jeopardises the sanitary certification of an entire batch. A British team led by Helen M. Cockerton, Bo Li, Robert J. Vickerstaff and colleagues published a 2019 study in Frontiers in Plant Science describing a phenotyping platform combining a drone (GPS and multispectral camera) with the NDVI index to automatically score verticillium severity across several strawberry populations in a varietal trial (see the study on Google Scholar).
That work was carried out within a British varietal-breeding programme — not a French commercial nursery — and the angle is deliberately broadened here: nothing shows an equivalent service exists today in Sologne. But the method transfers directly to screening mother-plant blocks: a repeated NDVI flight over a uniform block reveals pockets of vigor loss well before wilting is visible at row's end, pointing precisely to where a sample should be taken for analysis. On the same principle as varietal screening, vigor mapping in a nursery also helps document a plant batch's uniformity before certification and shipment.
What a drone never does on strawberry, and 2026 prices
The honesty clause. A drone sees nothing under a plastic tunnel or greenhouse — most of France's early production is grown that way, and that is exactly where an aerial camera loses all use for vigor monitoring. Verticillium wilt and other soil pathogens are never diagnosed by aerial imagery alone: a vigor map points to where a sample should be taken, it never replaces the laboratory analysis (fungal culture or PCR). Nor does a drone measure sugar content (°Brix), firmness or flavour — criteria only a grower or buyer can judge by taste or in a lab. Finally, strawberry has a low, compact canopy: getting enough resolution to tell individual plants apart means flying lower and with a finer GSD than on a tall crop, a trade-off detailed in our guide to ground sampling distance (GSD) in drone photogrammetry.
