Trichogramma release by drone: corn-borer biocontrol, method and price
The European corn borer is fought without insecticide by releasing Trichogramma — tiny parasitoid wasps that destroy the pest's eggs. Long placed by hand, card by card, these beneficials are now deployed by drone, which drops dispensers across the whole field in a fraction of the time. This is not spraying: it is biological control, with its own rules of timing and dose. Here is how the operation works, what the research says, and the prices observed in 2026.

The principle: parasitise the eggs, not treat the plant
Trichogramma is a parasitoid: the female lays inside corn-borer eggs, which will never yield a caterpillar. Efficacy therefore rests on a temporal coincidence — the beneficials must emerge and seek hosts at the pest's egg-laying, itself tracked by trapping and models. You do not "treat" a sick plant: you install a parasitism pressure on the field at the right moment. It is a preventive, biological logic, the opposite of chemical curing.
Research confirms the mechanism. A study by Martel and colleagues published in 2021 in the Journal of Economic Entomology evaluated drone release of Trichogramma against an agricultural and a forest pest in Canada: parasitism of sentinel eggs was higher in drone-treated plots than in controls, and the exposure duration of parasitised eggs influenced the emergence rate — hence the importance of timing (see the study on Google Scholar).
Why the drone: throughput, access, uniformity
Placing dispensers by hand is slow and arduous: entering tall maize, planting cards at regular intervals over dozens of hectares mobilises much labour at the worst point of the season. The drone drops the dispensers — balls or capsules — from above, without entering the crop, at high cadence and on a programmed regular grid. It treats waterlogged, sloping or awkwardly shaped fields alike, where a machine pass would be impossible or damaging.
Uniformity of the beneficial "sowing" is an asset: even spread beats a string of points along the rows. Framework and good practice
Releasing beneficials is not subject to the same framework as spreading plant-protection products: you deploy a biocontrol organism, not a chemical pesticide. The general aerial rules remain — operator registration, insurance, respect of zones — as does the logistics of living matter: cold chain, respect of the Trichogramma production dates, release in a compatible weather window (no heavy rain or excessive wind just after). The quality and freshness of the beneficial batch condition the result as much as the flight.
The right approach is to think in terms of a programme: corn-borer trapping, triggering at the right stage, sometimes two releases to cover staggered egg-laying. The drone provider executes a strategy decided with the agronomic adviser; it does not improvise a date. It is this calendar rigour that distinguishes a successful biocontrol from a token release.
