Wildlife counting by drone: method, regulatory framework and price

Counting a deer population across a forest block, tallying a seabird colony on a cliff, or tracking how a wild boar herd is spread out before a cull plan: ground counts or beaters almost always underestimate the real numbers, simply because they cannot cover the whole area at once. A drone fitted with a thermal camera or a long lens can survey the sector in a few dozen minutes and detect animals invisible from the ground, without disturbing them. Here is how a wildlife-counting mission works, what regulatory framework it falls under, and what it costs.

Why a drone improves count reliability

A traditional count depends on the observer: their position, experience, fatigue over a long beat. Across a forest block spanning several hundred hectares, part of the herd is systematically out of sight — tucked in a thicket, on the far side of a valley, in an area nobody could cover before nightfall. These blind spots skew the numbers used to set a cull plan, size a nature reserve or assess the impact of a development.

The thermal camera carried by a drone changes that: a warm-blooded animal stands out clearly from its surroundings after dark, even under light vegetation cover, which makes it possible to survey a whole plot in a fraction of the time with even coverage. A reference review on the use of unmanned aircraft in wildlife research, published by Chabot and Bird in 2015 in the Journal of Unmanned Vehicle Systems, lists the now well-established applications: observing and counting species, monitoring bird colonies, mapping habitat — already documenting, at the time, accuracy gains over ground-based methods across several taxa.

How a counting mission works

The mission starts with the area split into automated flight lanes, sized to the drone's endurance and the thermal camera's effective range. For deer and wild boar, the flight happens at night or dusk, when the temperature gap between the animal and its surroundings is greatest; for a nesting seabird colony on a coastal cliff, it is flown by day, using ordinary high-resolution photography, so as not to trigger a panic flush.

Every hot spot detected is automatically geotagged and cross-checked against complementary visual images, taken in parallel or on a second pass, to rule out false positives (livestock, rocks still warm from sunset). The final count combines the number of detections with the area covered, which on large forest blocks makes it possible to extrapolate a density per hectare rather than aim for an unrealistic exhaustive tally. The report delivered to the hunting federation, nature park or ecological consultancy includes a distribution map, headcounts by sector and the source imagery.

The regulatory framework for surveying a reserve or forest block

A counting flight usually falls under the open category, sub-category A3 in isolated rural areas: 120 m maximum height, a remote pilot registered as an operator on AlphaTango, and no flying over third parties or dwellings. Timing matters too: beyond any formal zoning, the breeding season (nesting, calving) calls for particular care and a flight altitude chosen so as not to trigger nest abandonment or a herd stampede — something an ecologist or the national forestry office is usually consulted on beforehand. As with any night flight, a préfecture declaration may be required depending on the zone — checking the Géoportail map beforehand remains the first step before any mission.

The price of a drone wildlife count in 2026

Frequently asked questions about drone wildlife counting

Does the drone disturb the animals? Flown at a suitable altitude and outside sensitive periods, a drone disturbs a herd far less than a beat or an approach on foot: most deer show no reaction to an overflight at 50 m or more.

Can species be told apart on a thermal image? Not always directly: the size and shape of the thermal signature often guide identification, confirmed by a pass with ordinary visual photography.

Does a drone count replace a ground count? It mostly complements it: it covers areas that are inaccessible or hard to see and gives an objective order of magnitude, but an ecologist's or game technician's expertise remains necessary to interpret the results.

Is specific authorisation needed to fly over a nature reserve? Yes in most cases: the reserve manager's approval should be requested beforehand, even for scientific or game-management use.
