Asbestos roof survey and removal monitoring by drone: asbestos-cement, price
Millions of square metres of French roofs are still covered in asbestos-cement: farm buildings, industrial sheds, warehouses from the 1960s to 1990s. These corrugated sheets are both a sanitary risk when they degrade and a fatal-fall risk when walked on — they are notoriously fragile. The drone brings two services complementary to the statutory survey here: mapping a suspect roof without climbing onto it, and monitoring the progress of a removal worksite without exposing an operative. Note: the drone never replaces the pre-works asbestos survey carried out by a certified operator with sampling. Here is what it usefully does, its exact place, and prices observed in 2026.

Identifying and mapping without climbing onto the roof
The drone's first value is not walking on a fragile roof. It photographs the covering in high resolution, maps the extent of suspected asbestos-cement sheets, spots degraded zones (broken, cracked, moss-covered sheets with surface fibres) and produces an orthophoto measuring the areas — a key figure for pricing removal and its disposal as hazardous waste.
The feasibility of this imagery-based identification is well documented. A study by Baek, Lee, Kim, Seo and Park published in 2023 in Sensors built a deep-learning model automatically classifying asbestos-cement sheets from drone images taken at 100 m (3 cm/pixel resolution) (see the study on Google Scholar). At larger scale, a study by Frassy, Candiani, Rusmini and co-authors published in 2014 in Sensors mapped asbestos-cement roofs and their weathering state across an entire Alpine region by remote sensing (see the study on Google Scholar). The drone inherits this capability at a single site's scale.
The drone's exact place: complement, never substitute
Let us be clear on the regulation: the pre-works asbestos survey is mandatory and must be carried out by a certified survey operator, with core samples analysed in an accredited laboratory. An image, however excellent, confers no analytical certainty: only laboratory analysis characterises the presence of asbestos. Its real value is upstream (screening an estate, targeting zones to sample, pricing a removal envelope) and downstream (documenting the state before the worksite, measuring areas). It saves time and improves safety for both surveyor and client, without ever carrying the responsibility of the statutory survey. This discipline — clearly stating what the tool does and does not do — is the one we apply everywhere on this site.
Monitoring the progress of a removal worksite
Once removal has started, the drone documents the progress of the strip-out without sending anyone up: state of treated zones, remaining areas, visual cleanliness of the substrate once the sheets are off, and the placement and integrity of collective protection measures seen from above. Dated passes, from the same angles, build an objective progress record useful to both client and health-and-safety coordinator, with the same logic as our BTP progress monitoring guide.
The aerial view also helps check the surroundings: no sheets set down outside the zone, clean approaches, routing of hazardous-waste skips. The drone of course stays outside the contained zone and replaces neither dust measurements, nor containment checks, nor final acceptance — it provides the overall visual layer.

Frequently asked questions
Does the drone confirm the presence of asbestos?
No. Only accredited-laboratory analysis of a sample characterises asbestos. The drone identifies and maps sheets suspected of being asbestos-cement and measures their areas; it prepares and complements the statutory survey, it does not replace it.
Why not just climb onto the roof?
Because asbestos-cement sheets are fragile and break under weight: falling through a fibre-cement roof is a recurring fatal accident in construction and farming. The drone documents the covering without exposing anyone to it.
