Industrial Dairy Plant Drone Inspection: Roof, Refrigeration Plant and Treatment Basins, ICPE Heading 2230, Method and Price
A packaging-hall roof that has absorbed years of clean-in-place steam and condensation with nobody ever climbing up to check it, an ammonia refrigeration plant whose outer condition only gets a look during a chance maintenance call, effluent treatment basins nobody re-measures or watches for surface anomalies : in an industrial dairy or cheese plant, classified under ICPE heading 2230, the building's envelope and outdoor equipment often remain the blind spot between two scheduled audits. The drone gives the operator a fast way to document, in a single campaign, the workshop roof, the refrigeration plant and the treatment basins, without putting anyone up at height or interrupting the production line. An industry classified in its own right, between collection and processing
An industrial dairy or cheese plant falls under ICPE heading n° 2230 ("reception, storage, treatment, processing… of milk or milk-derived products"), which sets three regimes according to daily processing capacity. Below the registration thresholds, the facility stays under the declaration regime, governed by the order of 5 December 2016 (sub-heading 2230.B.2 requirements). Above 70,000 litres of milk processed per day, it moves to the registration regime, under the order of 24 April 2017. The largest sites — receiving more than 200 tonnes of milk per day on an annual average — fall under heading 3643 ("treatment and processing of milk exclusively") or heading 3642 for mixed food plants, subject to the authorisation regime and the best available techniques (BAT) set by the order of 27 February 2020 for the food-processing sector.
This classification governs the operator's obligations toward the environmental inspectorate — emissions, noise, effluent management — but has nothing to do with the drone : that remains the job of fixed instrumentation and periodic checks by an accredited body. What the drone documents is the outer condition of the building and the structures around it — roof, refrigeration plant, basins —, on the same principle as for inspecting a slaughterhouse : a visual complement between two technical audits, never a substitute for the measurement obligations.
Processing and packaging hall roof
A dairy's processing hall often combines several zones under a single roof — raw-milk reception and storage, pasteurisation, an ageing room for a cheese plant, a packaging line — with a steel frame and a steel-deck or insulated sandwich-panel roof. This roof takes a particular thermal and hygrometric beating : steam and condensation from clean-in-place (CIP) washing with hot water and steam, sharp temperature gaps between the cold zones (storage, ageing room) and the process's hot zones, corrosion accelerated by a humid and sometimes salty atmosphere (cheese salting). Access is rare and costly — a platform or a rope technician, under the same welcome protocol as a standard industrial site (prevention plan, coactivity). A high-resolution orthophoto paired with a thermal pass spots, in a single campaign, waterproofing defects, cladding corrosion and standing-water points that foreshadow a future leak above a sensitive production room.
This thermal reading of the envelope rests on a technique well documented in the scientific literature : a study by Ortiz-Sanz and co-authors, published in 2019 in Remote Sensing, compared a drone-borne thermal camera with a pole-mounted fixed camera for detecting thermal bridges, air leaks and rising damp on a building envelope, finding comparable detection performance and a far shorter coverage time for the drone (see the study on Google Scholar) — a finding that transposes to a food-processing hall's envelope, where process humidity complicates diagnosis by eye.
Ammonia refrigeration plant and cooling towers
Refrigeration is a dairy's top energy item : cooling raw milk on reception, cold ageing rooms, packaging processes. Most industrial-scale sites run an ammonia (NH3) refrigeration system, chosen for its energy efficiency and zero greenhouse impact, but one that imposes strict safety rules around the compressor units and condensers installed on the roof or outdoors. Dairy effluent treatment basins
A dairy discharges effluent with a heavy organic load — whey, wash water from tanks and lines, clean-in-place residues — whose chemical oxygen demand (COD) can run several dozen times higher than a typical urban effluent. Most industrial-scale sites run an in-house treatment plant or a pre-treatment stage before discharge to the sewer network, with one or more open-air basins (buffering, aeration, settling). Method, flight framework and price
The mission is scheduled outside milk-collection peaks — usually mid-day, between two tanker rounds — and follows the same welcome protocol as a standard industrial site : prevention plan, safety briefing with the site manager, compliance with traffic circuits that forbid any crossing with active reception-dock areas. The drone never enters the workshops ; it flies over the roof, refrigeration plant and basins under the open category, subject to prior notification if the site borders a populated area, common for a dairy plant located in a rural area near a village or in a peri-urban business park.

Frequently asked questions about drone inspection of a dairy plant
Can the drone measure the treatment plant's discharge quality? No : that measurement remains the job of the analysers and the statutory self-monitoring required by the prefectural operating order. The drone documents the visual and thermal condition of the structures, which guides the follow-up check.
Who commissions this service? The dairy or cheese plant operator (private industrial group, dairy cooperative), usually the maintenance or QHSE manager, for a preventive audit, ahead of a scheduled technical shutdown, or to prepare an ICPE permit renewal.
Does the drone fly over the active processing hall? No : the mission is limited to the building's outer envelope — roof, rooftop or ground-level equipment — and the treatment basins, and never enters the workshops or flies over a line in operation.
Does this service suit a small farmhouse or artisan cheese maker? It is mainly designed for an industrial-scale site with an extensive roof, a sizeable refrigeration plant and treatment basins ; a small farmhouse cheese maker will find less value in it, except for a one-off roof diagnosis ahead of works.
