Slaughterhouse Drone Inspection: Roof, Ammonia Refrigeration Plant and Pre-Treatment Plant, Method and Price
A refrigeration compressor running a little longer than the others, a roof that pools water after every high-pressure wash-down, a cooling tower nobody climbs to check because there's no time between two days of slaughtering: on an agri-food site stacked under three separate control regimes — slaughter, ammonia refrigeration and effluent discharge —, the building's outer envelope is often the blind spot of the inspection routine. The drone gives the operator a fast way to document, in a single campaign, the condition of the roof, the outdoor refrigeration plant and the pre-treatment basins, without stopping production or sending anyone up. A site under triple constraint: slaughter, ammonia refrigeration, discharge
A slaughterhouse stacks three separate control regimes on a single site. The slaughtering activity itself falls under ICPE heading n° 2210 ("animal slaughter"), governed by the order of 30 April 2004 as amended in 2019, under the authorisation regime for most industrial sites — the declaration regime (2210-3) covering only low-tonnage facilities or mobile slaughterhouses. The refrigeration plant feeding the cold rooms, freezing tunnels and cutting areas falls under a separate regime: heading 4735 ("ammonia"), created in 2014 to transpose the Seveso 3 directive, applies as soon as a potential leak could release gaseous NH3 — a high threshold of 200 tonnes placing the installation under the authorisation regime, with lower quantities falling under registration or declaration depending on the case. A third strand, effluent pre-treatment (blood, fat, wash water), completes this triptych before discharge to the sewer or the environment.
For the operator, these three regimes translate into monitoring obligations and an ICPE file the environmental inspectorate can review at any time: condition of the roof and containment, maintenance of the refrigeration circuit, compliance of the pre-treatment plant. The drone doesn't lighten any of these statutory obligations, but it gives the operator a fast way to document the visual condition of all three strands between inspections, without stopping production or accessing sensitive areas.
Roof and cladding: the surface nobody walks
An industrial slaughterhouse roof frequently covers several thousand square metres of steel decking or insulated sandwich panels, with a shallow pitch and many singular points — smoke vents, workshop ventilation ducts, refrigeration pipe runs to rooftop condensers. Access is rare, costly (cherry picker or rope technician) and constrained by the site's biosecurity circuits: every working-at-height intervention requires an access protocol agreed with the quality department, on the same principle as a standard industrial site. A high-resolution orthophoto paired with a thermal pass spots, in a single campaign, waterproofing defects, corrosion of the steel cladding — accelerated on this type of site by moisture and the frequent high-pressure wash-downs required by food hygiene rules — and standing-water points that foreshadow a future leak.
The same principle already applies on this site to standard cold-storage warehouses: a thermal loss visible on the roof over a cold room almost always signals a break in the insulation's waterproofing, before any infiltration becomes visible from inside.
Ammonia refrigeration plant: what thermography adds, and its limit
An industrial slaughterhouse most often uses ammonia (NH3) as its refrigerant, for its excellent energy efficiency and lower cost than fluorinated gases — a practice also found in dairies, breweries and other food-processing sites. A thermal drone doesn't directly detect a gas leak: that function remains the job of the fixed detectors in the machine room, required by the ICPE 4735 regulation itself. What a thermal pass over the evaporative condensers and outdoor piping does spot are the indirect anomalies that often precede an incident: a hot spot on a compressor, degraded insulation on an outdoor pipe run revealing a thermal bridge, a malfunctioning cooling tower showing up as an abnormal temperature gap between cells.
A study by Javier Gómez and Alberto Tascón, published in 2021 in the journal Informes de la Construcción (DOI 10.3989/ic.84138), developed and validated a drone inspection protocol specific to agro-industrial buildings, tested on the real case of a 7,200 m² wine-ageing facility fitted with a mechanical heating and cooling system whose logic is close to a slaughterhouse's refrigeration plant — confirming that a flight protocol structured in several stages can document such a building's condition in a repeatable way (see the study on Google Scholar). As with any industrial thermography mission, the report handed to the client points toward a check by an accredited refrigeration technician; it never substitutes for one.
Effluent pre-treatment plant: an often-forgotten link
Upstream of discharge to the sewer network or the environment, a slaughterhouse almost always runs a pre-treatment plant for its effluent — degreasing, flotation, sometimes biological treatment — tasked with bringing the fat and nitrogen load from blood and by-products below the thresholds set by the prefectural operating order. These outdoor basins lend themselves to the same aerial diagnostic as a municipal wastewater treatment plant: dike and liner integrity, condition of the screens, surface deposits — with an added odour and sanitary constraint specific to the site.
Documenting this whole chain — roof, refrigeration, effluent — in a single georeferenced report gives the operator a file useful when the prefectural operating order comes up for renewal, or to respond quickly to a request from the environmental inspectorate after an incident at a comparable site.
Method, flight framework and price
The mission is scheduled outside the slaughtering activity's peak hours — usually early morning or late in the day — and follows the same welcome protocol as a standard industrial site: prevention plan, safety briefing with the site manager, compliance with biosecurity circuits that forbid any crossing with active slaughtering areas. The drone never enters the buildings; it flies over the roof, the outdoor refrigeration plant and the pre-treatment basins under the open category, subject to a prior declaration if the site borders a populated area, which is common on the edge of towns or in business parks.
The deliverable pairs an orthophoto and a thermal pass of the roof with a report focused on the outdoor refrigeration plant (hot spots, degraded insulation) and, if the mission includes it, a visual diagnostic of the pre-treatment basins. 2026 prices (excl. Frequently asked questions about drone inspection of a slaughterhouse
Can the drone detect an ammonia leak? Not directly: that detection remains the job of the fixed sensors in the machine room, required by ICPE regulation. The drone spots indirect thermal anomalies that guide the follow-up check.
Who commissions this service? The slaughterhouse operator (private industrial group, cooperative, public utility), usually the maintenance or QHSE manager, for a preventive audit, ahead of renewing the operating order, or after weather damage.
Does the drone fly over the slaughtering areas? No: the mission is limited to the building's outer envelope — roof, cladding, rooftop or ground-level equipment — and never enters the workshops or flies over active slaughtering areas.
Is a special biosecurity authorisation needed? The flight itself follows ordinary drone law; site access and any sanitary airlock the pilot must pass through follow the establishment's own protocol, to be agreed beforehand with the QHSE manager.
