Drone Services on the Canal Seine-Nord Europe Site: Construction Monitoring and Archaeological Support
The Canal Seine-Nord Europe is currently the largest civil engineering site under way in Europe: a 107-kilometre high-capacity canal, able to carry convoys of up to 4,400 tonnes, that will eventually link the Seine basin to northern Europe's high-capacity waterway network via the Escaut river. 2026 marks a turning point, with the launch of the major earthworks and structural engineering contracts along the route, across the Oise, Somme, Pas-de-Calais and Nord départements. On a site of this scale — digging the navigation channel, building exceptional locks, crossing rivers, and running one of the largest preventive archaeological programmes ever carried out in France — a drone documents construction progress and directly supports the archaeologists working ahead of each section. An exceptional site between Compiègne and Cambrai
The Canal Seine-Nord Europe route links the Oise river, near Compiègne, to the Dunkirk-Escaut canal near Cambrai, over 107 kilometres crossing four départements: the Oise, the Somme, the Pas-de-Calais and the Nord. Once completed, it will let high-capacity barges and pushed convoys, carrying up to 4,400 tonnes, connect the Paris basin directly to northern Europe's high-capacity waterway network (Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany) without any transhipment. Commissioning is targeted for around 2032, with the full route not expected to be flooded before 2033.
2026 marks a decisive step in the works schedule: the award of the major earthworks and structural engineering contracts, the first 18-kilometre dig of the navigation channel in the Oise, continued construction of the Montmacq and Cambronne-lès-Ribécourt locks and the start of the Oisy lock, and the building of the canal bridge that will carry the canal over the Somme river. The Montmacq-Cambronne-lès-Ribécourt lock, with a 25-metre drop, will be the second-largest inland waterway lock in Europe — a structure on the scale of the project as a whole. Photogrammetric monitoring of earthworks and structures
On a linear site this long, periodic photogrammetric monitoring remains the reference tool for tracking progress objectively: a monthly or fortnightly pass over each active section produces an orthophoto and a digital terrain model comparable from one visit to the next, making it possible to calculate the volumes of cut and fill moved as the channel is dug. The canal's structures — locks with drops of several dozen metres, the canal bridge crossing the Somme, road bridges rebuilt over the route — call for specific monitoring: recording formwork and reinforcement as concrete is poured, dimensional checks against the project's digital model, periodic photographic documentation for the project owner and its funders. One of the largest archaeological digs in France
Before earthmoving machinery starts on a section, the canal's route must first be surveyed and, where warranted, excavated: since 2008, more than 3,450 hectares have undergone preventive archaeological diagnostics along the 107 kilometres, with more than a hundred excavation orders issued by the regional cultural affairs authority. Since a second phase of excavations began in 2020, thirty-five digs have been ordered, with as many as eight running at once, mobilising close to a hundred archaeologists; this second phase is entirely funded by the canal company, to the tune of €110 million. The finds speak to the scale of the operation: mammoth tusks more than 300,000 years old, remarkably well preserved; the "Dame de Villers-Carbonnel", a 6,500-year-old clay figurine and the only complete human representation of its era known in France; a Merovingian necropolis at Étricourt-Manancourt, in the Somme; a grouped Merovingian and Carolingian settlement at Bourlon, in the Pas-de-Calais. The Canal Seine-Nord Europe is, to date, the regional development project that has generated the most archaeological discoveries in France.
A drone never replaces manual excavation, painstaking by nature, but it speeds up and de-risks its documentation: an orthophoto and a 3D model of a stripped surface, produced in a few dozen minutes of flight, fix the state of an archaeological layer before the dig itself destroys it, and make it possible to track the progress of an excavation that sometimes spans several hectares. Waagen and A. van Hilst published, in 2025 in the Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports, a case study on an Iron Age and Roman-period settlement excavation at Veldhoven, in the Netherlands, comparing several drone-mounted sensors — visible, near-infrared and thermal — to document an ongoing dig and validate its archaeological interpretation (see the study on Google Scholar). The same principle applies along the canal's route: the drone documents, the archaeologist interprets and excavates.
A flight framework negotiated section by section, not for all 107 km at once
A 107-kilometre site is never authorised as a single block: it is broken down into dozens of work packages, awarded to different consortiums depending on the section (earthworks, locks, structures, utilities), each with its own schedule and its own access. A drone mission is therefore commissioned through the company or consortium holding the relevant work package, or through the archaeological operator running a specific dig — rarely through the public body carrying the project as a whole, which delegates most of the execution to its contractors. As always, zone analysis is done site by site: a section out in open countryside, far from any dwelling, usually falls under open category A3; a section near a populated area, a busy road or a local airfield calls for extra checks and, sometimes, a specific protocol.

Method, flight framework and prices
A mission on the canal site breaks down into three complementary uses: periodic photogrammetric monitoring of earthworks and structures (comparing one visit to the next, calculating volumes), archaeological support (orthophoto and 3D model of a stripped surface, progress documentation) and environmental mapping of wetlands and compensation measures. Almost all these flights fall under the open category, A3 out in open countryside; zone analysis remains necessary section by section.

Three limits to keep in mind: a drone replaces neither a chartered surveyor for a legally binding boundary survey, nor an archaeologist for interpreting and recovering a find, nor the geotechnical soil testing required before building a structure. Can a drone replace the preventive archaeological digs along the canal's route?
No. An archaeological dig remains painstaking manual work — progressive stripping, stratigraphic recording, recovering and studying finds — that no overflight replaces. A drone speeds up and de-risks the photographic and three-dimensional documentation of a stripped surface, before and during the dig, but interpreting and excavating remain the archaeologists' job.
How does a drone pilot operate on a site 107 kilometres long?
Never under a single authorisation covering the whole route. The site is split into dozens of work packages awarded to different companies, each with its own schedule and its own access; a drone mission is commissioned through the holder of the relevant package, and zone analysis is done case by case, section by section, as on any other site.
