Every project on an existing building starts with a survey — and the façade is the most thankless part: tall, crowded with mouldings, unreachable without a lift, distorted on photos taken from the pavement. For an architect, a design team or a quantity surveyor, the point is not pretty pictures but a measurable document: a rectified, to-scale façade orthophoto on which to draw elevations, quantify render or stone areas, and position every opening. The drone produces that document in half a day, with no scaffolding or lift. Here is what a façade orthophoto exactly is, the accuracy to expect, and prices observed in 2026.

The façade orthophoto: a photo you can measure
An ordinary façade photo is unusable for drafting: perspective, converging lines, lens distortion. The façade orthophoto corrects all of it: dozens or hundreds of drone images, taken frontally at constant distance, are assembled by photogrammetry into a single image rectified in the façade plane and scaled — every pixel has a known size, typically 2 to 5 millimetres. You measure a pier width or a sill height as on a drawing, and import it into CAD as the base layer for elevations.
The method comes from heritage work, where it is proven: a study by Murtiyoso and Grussenmeyer published in 2017 in The Photogrammetric Record details the documentation of heritage buildings from close-range drone images and the pitfalls of restitution — acquisition geometry, control, dense-cloud quality (see the study on Google Scholar). What works for a cathedral works for a Haussmann block or an industrial hall: the façade becomes a working document.
Accuracy, control and deliverables: what to require
Three levels of requirement to set at quotation. Resolution first — 2 to 5 mm/pixel for elevation drafting, finer for ashlar-stone diagnosis. Dimensional control next: without control points an orthophoto is internally consistent but its absolute scale can drift by a few centimetres; a few check measurements (rangefinder, survey points) bring the error down to about a centimetre on an ordinary façade — enough for elevations and quantities, to be distinguished from a licensed surveyor's legally binding survey. Geometry last: balconies, set-backs and deep mouldings need complementary oblique shots, otherwise they render distorted.
Usual deliverables: one orthophoto per façade (scaled, georeferenced TIFF/JPEG), point cloud or 3D mesh if the project needs it, and oblique detail photos. Street, courtyard and party-wall façades: the real cases
The street façade in a dense town is the most regulated case (populated-area flight) but the most profitable: no survey scaffolding, no lift on the roadway, no traffic order. The courtyard façade, often impossible to photograph with any set-back from the ground, becomes trivial for a drone climbing inside the courtyard volume — that is frequently where the gain is starkest. The façade survey combines naturally with diagnosis: the same image campaign serves the drawing and the condition report — cracks, spalls, suspected hollow render to confirm. Frequently asked questions
Does a façade orthophoto replace a licensed surveyor's survey?
No, it does not substitute for one when the stakes are cadastral or strictly regulatory (boundaries, easements, legally binding party-wall records): there the licensed surveyor remains essential — and often flies a drone themselves. For drafting elevations, quantifying a renovation or assembling tender documents, a controlled orthophoto suffices in the great majority of cases.
How do you handle façades masked by trees or street furniture?
We multiply viewpoints (oblique flights, different heights) to see behind obstacles, and permanently masked zones are flagged as such on the deliverable rather than artificially reconstructed. With dense foliage, flying in the leaf-off season changes everything: it is a scheduling criterion to anticipate.
