Fuel Station Canopy Drone Inspection: Structure, ICPE Compliance and Pricing
At a filling station, one structural element dominates everything else without ever drawing attention: the canopy. Posts, steel or concrete frame, roof — this structure shelters the fuel pumps and the customers filling up, and increasingly carries a rooftop photovoltaic installation as well. Since the French order of 15 April 2010, it has also been part of the regulatory setup: to qualify as "secured distribution", a station must be covered by a steel or concrete canopy spanning the entire containment area of the fuel islands. Yet no French rule requires a periodic visual check of the structure itself — unlike the pumps, hoses and tanks, which are checked every year. A blind spot in ICPE compliance
A filling station distributing more than 100 m³ of fuel a year falls under rubrique 1435 of France's classified-installations nomenclature (ICPE): declaration up to 20,000 m³ a year, registration beyond that. This classification, created by decree No. 2010-367 of 13 April 2010, governs the whole site — tanks, dispensers, hydrocarbon separators, vapour-recovery equipment — through a set of orders dated 15 April 2010, each tailored to the applicable regime (declaration, registration or authorisation). Among other things, these texts require that at least once a year, all fuel-dispensing equipment be maintained by a competent technician and its proper operation verified, with reports kept available for the classified-installations inspectorate.
The same body of regulation defines "secured distribution": a setup that specifically requires a steel or concrete canopy covering at least the entire containment area of the fuel islands, at a height of 5 metres or less. The canopy is therefore not just a comfort feature for drivers — it is part of the system that contains an accidental fuel spill. The paradox: the mandatory annual check covers the dispensing equipment (pumps, hoses, tanks, vapour recovery), not necessarily the condition of the supporting structure itself — posts, frame, roof membrane. What an aerial survey documents on the structure
A drone flown a few metres from the canopy photographs every post, every fixing and the entire underside and roof, with enough resolution to catch corrosion on post base plates, loose fasteners, visible deformation of a frame member, or a failing waterproofing membrane on the roof. That last point matters twice over at a filling station: a leaking membrane can send rainwater running off the canopy outside the containment area it is meant to cover, striking directly at the purpose of the "secured distribution" setup. One technical point worth knowing: many canopy posts are hollow steel sections, where internal corrosion progresses without any visible external sign until an already advanced stage — a risk documented in the specialist literature on hollow metal structures, which justifies a regular external visual check alongside a deeper structural assessment whenever doubt arises.

The drone's role alongside the ICPE technician, not in their place
The survey replaces neither the mandatory annual check of the dispensing equipment, carried out by the competent technician required under the order of 15 April 2010, nor an in-depth structural assessment by an engineering firm once a serious defect is spotted — sagging, a cracked weld, through-corrosion. It plays a different role: flagging, dating and locating signs of wear across the whole structure before they warrant intervention, on the same principle detailed in our guide on hydrocarbon storage tank inspection for another structure exposed to the same environmental constraints. For a single operator, it is an objective starting point before calling in a rope-access technician or a lift; for a national network, it lets teams prioritise site visits where they are genuinely needed rather than applying the same cycle to every station.
The flight is almost always conducted under the open category, close to the fuel islands but never over customers: a quiet time slot, or a brief hold on the area concerned, is coordinated with the site operator — often around a fuel delivery, when traffic on the forecourt is reduced anyway.
