Inspecting signs, totems and billboards by drone: safety, upkeep, prices
A roof sign torn off in a storm, a retail park totem whose base rusts silently, a large-format banner whose fixings give way one by one: France's stock of signs and advertising structures is ageing at height, where nobody ever climbs — except after an incident. Liability, though, stays firmly on the ground: the sign operator or billboard company answers for damage caused by a falling element, and French environmental law requires these structures to be kept in good working order. The drone finally makes that check simple: a few minutes per structure, no lift, no car park closure, with a photo report dating the condition of every fixing.

A huge stock, real obligations, zero visibility
The stock is everywhere: facade and roof signs on shops and head offices, totems and pylons in retail parks and service stations, large-format billboards along roads, giant LED screens, event banners and construction wraps. All share three traits: they sit at height, face the wind permanently, and hang on structures (masts, frames, outriggers) that nobody visually inspects up close. French environmental law nonetheless requires signs and advertising devices to be kept in a good state of cleanliness, upkeep and working order, and the operator's civil liability is engaged if something falls — insurers repeat it after every storm.
In practice, upkeep is often limited to replacing light sources and cleaning, done from the ground or with an occasional lift: the load-bearing structure, mast welds, anchor plates and bolting are only looked at incidentally — precisely the check the drone systematises.
What the drone checks, structure by structure
The typical inspection combines high-resolution photography and, where useful, thermography:
- Fixings and anchors: bolting, base plates, welds, corrosion at the joints — the classic failure points, photographed from a few dozen centimetres.
- Load-bearing structure: mast or frame (corrosion, deformation, tell-tale paint cracks), roof-sign support frames, ballast and bracing of panels.
- The device itself: condition of letters and light boxes, banner tension and eyelets, failed LED modules — thermography reveals overheating drivers and power supplies before the visible failure.
- The surroundings: vegetation in contact, damage at the base, post-storm visual condition for the insurer.
The reliability of drone-based visual inspection of structures has long been documented: Guido Morgenthal and Norman Hallermann showed as early as 2014, in Advances in Structural Engineering, the conditions under which drone imagery reaches sufficient quality for structural defect detection — distance, light, stability (see the study on Google Scholar). Those shooting rules separate a "just looking" photo from a usable record; they apply here as they do to high-mast lighting, the totem's structural cousin.
For whom: multi-site retailers, billboard companies, estate managers
Three profiles concentrate demand. Multi-site retailers (retail, restaurant chains, service stations): their stock of signs and totems runs to hundreds of identical units — a drone inspection round standardises the check, feeds preventive maintenance and documents compliance for the insurer, site after site. Billboard companies: large-format roadside panels get inspected without closing the road or parking a lift on the verge — a safety advantage as much as an economic one. Retail park and business estate managers: sign inspection folds naturally into the periodic building audit — roofs, facades, technical equipment — for a complete site condition report in a single visit.

2026 prices
Orders of magnitude observed in France in 2026 (excl. VAT):
- Single structure (roof sign, totem, billboard): €300 to €600 for a full check with an annotated photo report.
- Full site (store: signs + roof + facades): €600 to €1,200 depending on size.
- Multi-site round: strongly tapering — on a regional stock of dozens of structures, the unit cost routinely drops below €200.
- Post-storm check (fast record for the insurer): €250 to €500 per site, with priority scheduling.
