Historic-monument roof inspection by drone: listed building, price

A historic monument ages from the top: it is the roof, chimney stacks, valleys, spire and cornices that take water, frost and wind before the rest. Yet these are exactly the hardest and most expensive parts to reach: scaffolding a church or château commits weeks and tens of thousands of euros before you even know what you are looking for. The drone reverses the approach: first document, in fine detail, the real condition of the upper parts, then decide where and how to intervene. For a heritage architect, a heritage authority or an owner municipality, it is a diagnosis and archival tool. Here is what it brings to conserving a listed edifice, its limits, and prices observed in 2026.

Documenting the upper parts without scaffolding

The drone photographs from a few metres what no pair of binoculars shows: lifted or missing slates, cracked tiles, tired lead in valleys and flashings, punctured zinc, framing defects visible beneath a spire, vegetation in gutters, cracking of high masonry, the state of crosses, finials and weathervanes. Each image is placed on the edifice, and the whole can be assembled into a 3D model or a roof orthophoto usable by the architect.

This approach is validated by conservation research. A study by Sestras, Roșca, Bilașco and co-authors published in 2020 in Sensors uses drone photogrammetry to produce a photorealistic 3D model of a heritage building used for visual inspection, structural-defect analysis and restoration planning (see the study on Google Scholar). The drone does not replace the heritage architect's eye: it gives them, without scaffolding, the exhaustive visual material on which to base a diagnosis.

A specific flight framework around heritage

Flying around a monument stacks constraints. The edifice is often in the town centre, hence built-up, with the framework of our flying in cities guide; it may sit near an aerodrome or a prohibited zone; and its surroundings may fall under protected areas. The flight is finely prepared: obstacle survey (cables, other spires), low-footfall slots, coordination with the site manager and, where relevant, informing the local authority.

Flying close to old stone or lead calls for extra caution: safety distances, no close downwash on a fragile element or decoration, slow piloting. From inspection to archive and restoration project

The drone survey serves well beyond a one-off check. As an archive: a 3D model or roof orthophoto, repeated at regular intervals, documents a defect's evolution and forms a record of the edifice before works. As a project: the images feed the architect's file, quantify the relative urgency of interventions and help prioritise the always-scarce heritage budgets.
