Invasive plant mapping by drone: knotweed, water primrose, method and price

Japanese knotweed on riverbanks, water primrose on water bodies, ragweed on wasteland: invasive alien plants are costly to manage and are best fought when spotted early and their patches tracked precisely. Foot survey is slow, incomplete and misses inaccessible zones. A drone maps a bank, a wetland or a brownfield in one flight, locates each patch and allows its spread to be measured year on year. Here is the method, its limits, and the prices observed in 2026.

What the drone detects, and at which stage

Many invasive species form dense, distinct stands — knotweed, water primrose — recognisable by their own texture, colour and phenology. The drone produces a high-resolution orthophoto and, in some cases, multispectral indices, from which patches are delineated and their area computed. A study by Martin, Müllerová, Borgniet, Dommanget, Breton and Evette published in 2018 in Remote Sensing shows that combining single-date and multi-date drone imagery accurately tracks knotweed, seasonal repetition markedly improving discrimination (see the study on Google Scholar).

The flight date is decisive. You target the stage where the species stands out best from surrounding vegetation — knotweed flowering, full development of water primrose. The literature stresses that very fine resolution (low-altitude RGB) is often more effective than coarse multispectral for these plants: the right sensor depends on species and habitat, which a provider must know how to arbitrate.

The use: manage, prioritise, prove

A patch map serves three concrete uses. It prioritises intervention — treating the upstream reach first to avoid recolonisation by cuttings, targeting young, still-eradicable patches. It measures effectiveness — comparing two campaigns shows whether management is truly shrinking the area, or not. It finally documents the monitoring towards funders and regulatory obligations, with figures and maps.

This mapping fits naturally into habitat management: banks and watercourses (GEMAPI), wetlands, but also linear corridors and brownfields. On a single flight, the general state of the habitat is often documented as much as the invasive patches, pooling the information for the manager.

Limits: the species, the layer, the terrain

The drone excels on species forming stands visible from the sky. It struggles, however, with sparse, understorey or small plants: knotweed hidden under a riparian canopy, a few scattered ragweed plants in a cover, escape the aerial view. The drone map is therefore an excellent tool for clearing the information at site scale, to be completed by targeted foot surveys on sensitive or doubtful zones.

Species confusion remains possible: a classification needs ground control points so as not to mistake a native species for the invasive one. As always in remote sensing, the map orients and quantifies; it is the manager's eye, calibrated on a few checks, that validates. Well used, it turns a scattered survey into a mapped, repeatable inventory.
