Drone Services in Corsica: Nature Reserves, Wildfires and Coastal Heritage in France's Most Restricted Island
A pilot used to flying on the mainland finds a different setting in Corsica : an island where almost every other flight touches, directly or indirectly, a protected area. More than half the island's territory is covered by a regional nature park, two nature reserves rank among the most protected in France — one of them, Scandola, bans overflight outright — and the summer of 2026 was a stark reminder, with the Restonica valley wildfire near Corte, of how much fire risk now shapes professional missions on the island. Here is what actually changes when preparing a drone mission in Corsica : the airspace rules to check before any quote, the uses that carry real value — fire-risk mapping, Posidonia meadow monitoring, coastal heritage — and 2026 prices.

An island under constraint: status, a regional park and two of France's most protected reserves
Corsica is a special case in the French administrative landscape : the only single territorial authority since the 2018 merger, it combines the powers of a region and of its two historic départements, Corse-du-Sud and Haute-Corse. This particular set-up comes with a rare ecological reality : the Parc naturel régional de Corse, created on 12 May 1972, today covers roughly half the island's territory — some 440,200 hectares across 178 communes — making it, proportionally, one of France's largest regional parks.
Two nature reserves managed within this territory rank among the most protected stretches of the French coastline. The Scandola nature reserve, classified in 1975 (1,669 hectares, including 919 hectares of land forming a peninsula north of the Gulf of Porto and 750 hectares of sea), has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1983 as part of the Gulf of Porto — Calanche de Piana — Gulf of Girolata ensemble. The Bouches de Bonifacio nature reserve, classified in 1999 (close to 80,000 hectares, over 99 % of it marine), is the largest nature reserve in mainland France and is said by its manager to hold more than a third of the Mediterranean's notable species. Airspace rules: what to check before discussing the mission itself
Before any quote in Corsica, the first check is airspace-related, not commercial. Flying over the Scandola nature reserve is banned, including in the open category : no general exemption exists for routine professional use, and only a reasoned request to the manager — the Office de l'environnement de la Corse — can open an exception, for a scientific or management purpose, never for convenience commercial filming. The Bouches de Bonifacio reserve applies a comparable logic, with differentiated rules depending on the zone of reinforced protection. The Parc naturel régional de Corse as a whole does not impose a blanket overflight ban, but some of the sectors it manages — reserve cores, Natura 2000 sites, nesting zones — call for the same caution.
Second filter : aerodrome zones. Corsica has four airports open to commercial traffic — Ajaccio Napoléon Bonaparte, Bastia Poretta, Calvi-Sainte-Catherine and Figari Sud-Corse — each with its own control zone (CTR), plus several secondary aerodromes and helipads tied to mountain rescue and firefighting. In practice, a pilot preparing a mission in Corsica must systematically cross-check three layers : airspace zoning, protected-area zoning, and seasonality — summer concentrates both most of the tourist activity and most of the fire risk, with tighter civil-security restrictions.
The Restonica valley wildfire and drone-based fire-risk mapping
The summer of 2026 was a brutal reminder of what fire risk means on the island : by mid-July, more than 1,600 hectares had already burned in Corsica across 125 separate fires. The most significant one started on 13 July 2026, triggered by lightning, in the Restonica valley, a protected site at the gates of Corte and a landmark starting point for hikes to the mountain lakes ; it spread to the neighbouring Tavignanu valley and required eighteen days of firefighting before being declared contained on 31 July, having burned through more than 1,000 hectares of vegetation. Both valleys, closed to the public during the operation, reopened gradually once the fire was under control — against a backdrop of immediate economic impact for the refuges, campsites and tourism operators of the area.
This is exactly the kind of terrain — dense maquis, rugged relief, valleys hard for ground crews to reach — where aerial mapping delivers value no other method easily replaces, at two points in the season :
- Before the season : mapping the maquis fuel load (vegetation height, horizontal and vertical continuity, break zones) to prioritise mandatory brush-clearing around homes and roads, following the same logic as our guide to drones and wildfire prevention.
- After the fire has passed : mapping burn severity by zone, detecting residual hot spots under the canopy with a thermal camera, and monitoring vegetation recovery and soil erosion once bare ground meets the first autumn rains — missions detailed in our guides to wildfire burn-severity mapping and post-wildfire hot-spot detection.
Research backs this drone-based approach to fuel mapping in a Mediterranean setting : a study by R. Hoffrén, M. T. Lamelas and J. de la Riva, published in 2024 in Remote Sensing, evaluates a UAV-LiDAR system across 73 forest plots in north-eastern Spain — a climate and vegetation close to Corsican maquis — and shows that drone-based classification by the Prometheus height strata (0-60 cm, 60 cm-2 m, 2-4 m) enables fine-grained fuel characterisation, with a further accuracy gain when aerial data is combined with a ground-based laser scanner (see the study on Google Scholar). Applied to Corsican maquis, this is exactly the approach that lets a commune or a forestry management body prioritise prevention work before lightning, or negligence, replays the Restonica scenario.
Posidonia meadows and coastal heritage: two monitoring missions specific to the marine reserves
In the waters of the Bouches de Bonifacio as in the marine part of Scandola, the number-one ecological concern is often invisible from the shore : Posidonia meadows (Posidonia oceanica), a Mediterranean-endemic marine plant classified as a protected species, which stabilises sandy seabeds, produces oxygen and shelters biodiversity disproportionate to its surface area. Their decline — unregulated anchoring, leisure-boat anchors, coastal development — is an indicator closely tracked by reserve managers, and aerial mapping is playing a growing role alongside diving surveys, able to quickly cover large areas of the shallow, clear water typical of the Corsican coastline in summer.
A study by S. F. Rende, A. Bosman, F. Bruno and co-authors, published in 2020 in the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering, combines satellite imagery, drone photomosaics, multibeam bathymetry and underwater photogrammetry precisely to map Posidonia meadows in the Tyrrhenian Sea ; drone-based classification there reaches over 99 % accuracy in distinguishing living meadow from dead matte and bare seabed (see the study on Google Scholar). For a reserve manager or a marine-environment consultancy, this is a method directly transposable to the meadows of the Bouches de Bonifacio or Scandola, alongside — never replacing — bathymetric data and control dives.
On land, the Corsican coastline packs a dense and exposed built heritage : Genoese citadels (Bonifacio, Calvi, Bastia, Saint-Florent), coastal watchtowers, hilltop villages in Balagne and Cap Corse. Coastal erosion directly threatens foundations built on clifftops, while regular photogrammetric monitoring of ramparts and façades — for a listed monument roof or a façade diagnostic before rendering work — lets coastal communes document the state of their heritage without scaffolding in a protected site, often inaccessible to a cherry picker down these narrow streets.
Other professional missions on the island and 2026 prices (excl. VAT)
Beyond the reserves and fire risk, the Corsican economy offers other solid professional ground for drones : construction monitoring along mountain roads and in the ports (Ajaccio, Bastia, Porto-Vecchio, Propriano, L'Île-Rousse), photogrammetry for development projects constrained by the terrain, roof thermography across a stock of older, often poorly insulated buildings, vineyard mapping for the Vin de Corse and Patrimonio appellations, or monitoring the chestnut groves of Castagniccia for the AOP Corsican chestnut flour trade — a niche but real market, in line with our guides to forest health detection and vine water stress. The GR20, Europe's most demanding long-distance trail, and the island's sharp tourist seasonality — the population can more than double in summer — also drive standard audiovisual and real-estate demand, to be handled with the same regulatory care as every other mission.
Organisationally, a mission in Corsica is prepared like anywhere else, but with a longer safety margin : allow several weeks to obtain an overflight agreement in a reserve zone where the purpose justifies one, and systematically check seasonal civil-security forest restrictions before any flight between June and September. On the ground, steep-sided valleys often mean coping with degraded GNSS signal and strong terrain-driven winds — the mistral and easterly winds can strengthen sharply inside gorges.
2026 prices (excl.
