Rampart and fortification inspection by drone: masonry, defects, 3D survey, price
A rampart, a city wall, a fort: kilometres of old masonry, often tall, overgrown, hard to reach, and protected. Inspecting them by telescope leaves blind spots; scaffolding them costs a fortune and damages the surroundings. The drone tracks the face at a controlled distance, documents each bay in high resolution and rebuilds a measurable 3D model, the basis for monitoring over time. Here is what a fortification inspection by drone covers, its heritage constraints, and the prices observed in 2026.

What the drone surveys on old masonry
The flight documents the masonry's visible defects: cracks, leaning and bulging of the face, hollow or washed-out joints, weathered or spalling stones, heterogeneous repairs, as well as colonising vegetation (roots in joints, shrubs on the crest) and the condition of copings and wall-walks. On water-bound works (moats, scarps), thermal and close-up views help spot damp zones and water ingress that work the structure.
Photogrammetry has become standard on these works. A study by Azzola, Cardaci, Mirabella Roberti and Nannei published in 2019 in the ISPRS Archives describes the drone survey of the Venetian walls of Bergamo, a World Heritage site: it shows the drone's ability to collect all the geometrical, material and deterioration information needed for a maintenance programme, fast enough to allow repeated monitoring of the whole wall circuit (see the study on Google Scholar).
From 3D model to the structure's health record
The central deliverable is a measurable 3D model and façade orthophotos (unfolded elevations) on which the heritage architect maps and quantifies the defects. At the scale of a circuit, this replaces partial, heterogeneous surveys with a homogeneous, dimensioned, dated documented state. Repeated over time, it becomes a health record: comparing two campaigns shows whether a crack is opening, a bulge advancing, a repair holding.

Heritage and flight constraints
These works are often listed or located near monuments, in urban centres, sometimes in busy tourist areas. The flight therefore requires checking overflight zoning and restrictions, obtaining authorisations, and managing the public's presence and the nearby buildings. The fineness sought means flying close to the face, at short distance from near-vertical surfaces: a demanding piloting, sensitive to wind and turbulence along the walls, that sets an experienced operator apart.
Light matters too: raking light reveals the relief of the defects, full sun flattens them. The right provider chooses the hour, plans the image overlap and documents its control points: it is this acquisition rigour that yields a usable model rather than a pretty flyover.
