Drone spraying in steep-slope vineyards in France: 2026 rules, method, price

In France's hillside vineyards — Burgundy's Côte-d'Or and Saône-et-Loire, Beaujolais, the northern Rhône, Alsace, Champagne, Jurançon —, the steepest plots are still treated with knapsack sprayers: hours of walking across the slope, an operator in contact with the product, and every year tracked-vehicle accidents on borderline gradients. It is precisely for these plots that the legislator reopened the door: aerial spraying remains prohibited in principle in France, but a law enacted in 2025 allows, on an experimental basis, drone application on plots with a gradient of at least 30%, using biocontrol, low-risk or organic-approved products. For the hillside winegrower, the question is no longer "is it legal?" but "how do I run a compliant campaign, and at what price?". Here are the answers observed in 2026.

The hillside problem: operator safety first

Above a 30% gradient, straddle tractors cannot pass and winches or tracked carriers reach their limits — cross-slope rollovers remain a recurring cause of serious accidents in viticulture. That leaves the knapsack sprayer: fifteen to twenty kilos on the back, on the slope, with the spray cloud as close to the operator as it gets. This trio — arduousness, exposure, accident rates — motivated the evaluation of drone application on steep slopes, and it is on operator safety that the French health agency ANSES reached its clearest conclusions during the first national experiment.

The drone moves the operator out of the plot and out of the cloud: piloting happens from a stable point, product is applied right over the row, and logistics come down to battery and mix rotations. On these plots, the drone's competitor is not the trailed sprayer — which will never get up there — but the applicator's back.

What the 2026 framework allows — and what it does not

The principle stands: aerial spraying of plant protection products is prohibited in France, drones included. The exception is experimental and bounded: the law enacted in 2025 allows, for three years, drone application on farm plots with a gradient of at least 30% — hillside vines being the textbook case — using biocontrol, low-risk or organic-approved products, under conditions set by implementing texts: weather, buffer zones, prior notification. A winegrower does not enter freely: the campaign is declared, tracked and evaluated. Outside this perimeter — a plot under 30%, a conventional product —, drone spraying remains prohibited in 2026, and offers that ignore it engage the farmer's liability as much as the provider's.

A compliant campaign: mapping, flight plan, drift

A serious campaign starts with mapping: a photogrammetric survey of the plot, computed gradients — this is what documents row eligibility —, obstacles (trellis posts, lines, isolated trees), then a terrain-following flight plan skimming the canopy, row by row. The drone works low and slow, nozzles calibrated, cutting spray at row ends; slots are chosen with light wind, early morning, to control drift towards neighbouring plots and homes.

Real-world performance is documented: a study by Daniele Sarri and colleagues published in 2019 in the Journal of Agricultural Engineering tested a multi-rotor spraying drone in a steep terraced vineyard and showed the operational feasibility of application, while underlining how much settings — flight height, nozzles, overlap — drive deposition quality (see the study on Google Scholar). In practice: a provider who does not start by mapping and calibrating is not doing the same job.

The same machine serves beyond treatment
