Tramway and BRT construction monitoring by drone: urban corridors, price

A tramway or bus rapid transit project is construction out of the ordinary: ten, fifteen, twenty kilometres of corridor through a living city, split into dozens of sections awarded to different contractors, crossing junctions that must stay open, passing shops that must survive three or four years of works. Nobody — not the client, the lead consultant or the elected officials — has an overview from the ground. The drone provides it: regular flights along the route yield section-by-section progress, compare as-built with schedule, document interfaces between packages and feed communication towards residents who endure the works. Here is how such monitoring is organised on an urban corridor, and prices observed in 2026.

The problem specific to urban linear works

On a building, the project manager takes in the site at a glance. On a corridor, information fragments: each works supervisor knows their own section, nobody sees the whole chain — and the schedule's real risks sit precisely at the interfaces: the late section that will block track-laying, the junction whose phasing slips, the utility that has not finished diverting its networks. The reference academic review on visual infrastructure monitoring by drone — Ham, Han, Lin and Golparvar-Fard, published in 2016 in Visualization in Engineering — already highlighted the aerial viewpoint's singular value for extended works, which neither fixed cameras nor ground rounds cover (see the study on Google Scholar).

Regular flights — weekly in intense phases, fortnightly in routine — produce a route orthophoto and per-section oblique series: platform earthworks, duct banks laid, kerbs poured, track laid, overhead line strung. Overlaid on the schedule, this imagery turns site reviews into a factual exercise: progress is no longer debated, it is observed.

Before works: the baseline of an entire corridor

A tramway route passes thousands of façades, walls, fences and pavements — so many potential claims: the crack "that appeared with the vibrations", the settlement "caused by the earthworks". Pre-construction expert surveys cover sensitive buildings, but not the whole corridor. A baseline flight, done before site installation, freezes the existing state end to end: façades in oblique series, roadways and pavements from above, particular structures in close-up. The same baseline serves the project itself: the corridor's centimetre-grade orthophoto, produced to the accuracy requirements of our RTK/PPK guide, verifies actual footprints, prepares traffic diversions and documents visible networks before their diversion. On a project worth hundreds of millions, this few-day flight is among the cheapest insurance in the file.

Flying over a city under works: the framework

The route is flown in segments, at hours when work zones are closed to the public; constrained sections (hospitals with helipads, sensitive sites) are handled by protocol. A contractor following a three-year project amortises this regulatory engineering over the full duration — one argument for a framework agreement rather than one-off orders.

The political dividend: showing the works to residents

A tramway project is lived as an ordeal by the city enduring it — penalised shops, severed routes, years of hoardings. Aerial imagery is the client's best storytelling tool: the time-lapse of a transformed junction, the monthly series showing the route advancing, the mid-project film revealing what the hoardings hide. Authorities that publish these images see the effect on acceptability: the works stop being an abstract nuisance and become a visible, progressing project.
