The region's airspace: eight nuclear reactors and a border with four countries
Formed in 2016 from the merger of three former regions, Grand Est has concentrated eight active nuclear reactors since 2020, run by EDF and together accounting for close to 18% of France's nuclear generating potential. The Cattenom plant, in Moselle, runs four 1,300 MWe reactors commissioned between 1986 and 1991, cooled by the Moselle river and recognisable by its four cooling towers; Chooz, in the Ardennes, on a meander of the Meuse at the Belgian border, operates two N4-class reactors — among the most powerful units in EDF's historic fleet before the EPR, around 1,500 MWe each; Nogent-sur-Seine, in the Aube, runs two 1,300 MWe reactors on the Seine, upstream of the Paris basin. Separately, the Fessenheim plant, in Haut-Rhin, was the first French nuclear plant permanently shut down — both its reactors stopped generating in 2020 — and is now in the middle of a decommissioning project, a site that will remain off-limits to civilian use for many years to come.

Verdun and the memory of the Great War: the zone rouge and the flight framework
Around Verdun, in the Meuse department, lies part of what France calls the zone rouge: roughly 120,000 hectares of former First World War battlefields, where damage to the terrain and the presence of millions of unexploded shells have durably banned or restricted certain uses. At Verdun alone, more than 60 million shells were fired in 1916; the state forest that now covers much of the battlefield, managed by the ONF, hides thousands of craters, trenches and shelters still legible in the terrain beneath the canopy.
That is precisely what aerial remote sensing reveals: a study by de Matos-Machado, Toumazet and colleagues, published in 2019 in the journal Earth Surface Processes and Landforms, used airborne LiDAR across the whole Verdun battlefield to map and classify more than a million war-related landforms — shell craters, trenches, buried structures — invisible from the ground beneath the forest canopy (see the study on Google Scholar). B2B missions: the slopes of Champagne and a cross-border industry
The Champagne vineyard, between the Montagne de Reims and the Vallée de la Marne, has some of the steepest slopes in France: terrain where a mounted tractor struggles and where the drone has found a concrete use since the decree of 29 May 2026, which authorises drone spraying on plots with a slope of at least 20%, provided the products used are biocontrol agents, low-concern natural preparations or organic-farming-compatible inputs — never a conventional synthetic pesticide. The forest in crisis: bark beetles in practice
Grand Est, together with neighbouring Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, is one of the epicentres of the bark beetle crisis that has hit French spruce stands since 2018: repeated summer droughts have weakened the spruce trees, leaving them vulnerable to attack by this wood-boring beetle, and tens of thousands of hectares of Vosges forest have had to be felled as an emergency measure, producing an unprecedented volume of salvage timber in the north-eastern quarter of the country. Spotting an outbreak before it becomes visible to the naked eye — at the so-called "green attack" stage, before the crown turns brown — changes everything for a forest manager: a landmark study by Näsi, Honkavaara and colleagues, published in 2015 in the journal Remote Sensing, showed that a hyperspectral camera mounted on a drone can identify affected spruce trees at different infestation stages, before symptoms are even visible from the ground (see the study on Google Scholar).

Is the Verdun battlefield accessible for a professional drone mission?
