Drone Services in Indre (36): Châteauroux Airport, the Brenne Ponds and the Champagne Berrichonne
Indre is the least populated département of the Centre-Val de Loire region, and one of the worst served when you look for a serious drone contractor. Yet it is a far more technical operating environment than its rural reputation suggests: above Châteauroux lies the control zone of a freight and maintenance airport with a 3,500-metre runway; an hour's drive away, the Brenne holds three thousand ponds listed as a wetland of international importance, with all the authorisations that entails; between the two, the Champagne Berrichonne spreads farms averaging 140 hectares and 173 consented wind turbine masts. This départemental guide sets out, sector by sector, what a drone mission genuinely delivers in the 36, the airspace and environmental constraints that govern it, and how prices are built. Three countries in a single département
Indre covers 6,791 km² across 241 communes and four arrondissements, with around 216,100 residents in 2023 — a population down 2.8% since 2017, for a density of roughly 32 inhabitants per square kilometre. It is one of the least densely populated départements in northern France, and that shows on the ground: distances between two mission sites run into tens of kilometres, and organising a full flying day is usually better than stringing half-days together.
Châteauroux, the county town, has 42,963 residents (2023) on a commune of just 19 km², within an urban unit of about 60,000 including Déols (7,618 residents) to the north. Then come Issoudun (11,159), Le Blanc (6,188) in the heart of the Brenne, and La Châtre (4,037) in the Boischaut Sud. Public procurement is therefore spread across hundreds of small communes with tight maintenance budgets — a context in which an aerial diagnosis costing a few hundred euros carries very different weight than in a big city.
Geography drives the rest. The département reads as three large blocks. To the north-east, the Champagne Berrichonne: a limestone plateau of arable farming, without relief or hedgerows, where farms average more than 140 hectares — the ideal configuration for a mapping flight. To the south-west, the Brenne: three thousand ponds, heathland, sandstone knolls and protected wetland status that entirely changes how a mission is prepared. In between and around, the Boischaut (North and South) and the Blancois: hedgerows, sunken valleys, livestock, and far more constrained ground visibility for a remote pilot.
On access, the 36's asset is the A20 motorway, toll-free from Vierzon to south of Brive over roughly 270 kilometres, crossing the département via Vatan, Châteauroux and Argenton-sur-Creuse. An operator based in the Indre naturally works out towards Bourges to the east, Limoges to the south and Poitiers to the west. Châteauroux-Centre "Marcel Dassault": a 3,500-metre runway and a control zone above the county town
This is the département's number one constraint, and contractors from elsewhere routinely underestimate it. Châteauroux-Centre "Marcel Dassault" airport (IATA CHR, ICAO LFLX), on the communes of Déols and Coings, is no flying-club airfield: its 03/21 runway is 3,500 metres long — extended from 2,500 m in 1995 — and takes every aircraft type up to the A380. Created in 1936 by Marcel Bloch, the future Dassault, the platform served as a US Air Force and NATO logistics base from 1951 to 1966; since March 2007 it has belonged to the Centre-Val de Loire regional council.
Its activity is industrial, not commercial: air freight, aircraft maintenance, pilot training, airport firefighter training, painting, storage and dismantling. Traffic in 2024 came to 5,693 passengers and 1,825 tonnes of freight: but the figure that matters lies elsewhere — in the 25 hectares given over to aircraft parking and in the companies based there: Daher, Vallair (storage, maintenance, conversion, dismantling), Satys Aerospace (surface treatment and painting), Dale Aviation and Paprec, which runs a 10,000 m² aircraft-recycling platform. More than 330 professionals work on the site, open 365 days a year from 8 am to 8 pm. During the 2020 health crisis, eleven British Airways A380s were parked there — an image that travelled the world.
For a remote pilot this translates into two very concrete facts. First, the Châteauroux-Déols control zone extends from the surface up to 2,500 feet (762 metres) and covers much of the conurbation: the county town, its business parks and part of the suburban ring sit under the CTR, active on weekdays during published time bands. One confidentiality point, often forgotten: on a storage and dismantling platform, the registrations visible on parked aircraft are commercially sensitive information for airlines and lessors. Any mission over or alongside those aprons is agreed with the operator, with an explicit rule on blurring and on image usage rights. This is not a theoretical precaution: it is the first reason a poorly prepared request gets refused.
The Brenne: three thousand ponds, a Ramsar site and a nature reserve
The Brenne Regional Nature Park covers 1,672 km² in the south-western quarter of the département, around Le Blanc. It is known as the land of a thousand ponds; the real count is more impressive still: roughly 3,000 ponds covering more than 7,000 hectares of water, with over 3,170 recorded by the regional biodiversity portal. These are not natural lakes but dug and embanked ponds, worked since the Middle Ages, arranged in chains where each body of water empties into the next.
Protection status matches the site. The Brenne has been a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention since 1991, across 140,000 hectares: it is mainland France's second largest wetland by area, behind the ponds of the Champagne humide. Added to that are Natura 2000 designations and the Chérine national nature reserve, created in 1985 to protect waterbirds, enlarged in 2011 and again on 28 December 2022 to reach 394 hectares and 3,401 recorded species, including the European pond turtle, the site's emblem.
For a drone mission the consequence is simple to state and expensive to ignore: permission to fly is not read off the aeronautical chart. It is built with the pond's owner — almost all are private —, with the protected site's manager and, where relevant, with the consenting authority. On those terms, the drone is a relevant tool, and the literature documents it. A study by M. A. Boon, R. Greenfield and S. Tesfamichael presented in 2016 at the ISPRS congress in Prague (International Archives of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences) assessed what drone photogrammetry brings to wetland assessment: over about a hundred hectares flown in a single sortie, it shows that the resulting orthophotos and surface models delineate wetland facies at a level of detail no routine satellite image reaches (see the study on Google Scholar). In the Brenne this translates into three concrete deliverables: surveys of dykes and outlet structures before works, mapping of vegetation belts (reedbeds, sedge beds, willow carr) for a management plan, and multi-year monitoring of water surfaces after a dry year. Pond fish farming: the département's most distinctive sector
Behind the landscape lies an economy. Brenne pond aquaculture supports more than 300 owners and around fifty jobs, with a dozen fish merchants, for annual output of roughly 800 tonnes of fish, 60% of it carp; the rest is mainly roach, tench and pike. The sector's total turnover is around €3 million, and much of the production is exported to Alsace, Germany and Britain. A processing workshop, Fish Brenne, was set up in 2002. The high point is the draining season, from October to February, when ponds are fished chain by chain.
The sector is fragile for very material reasons, and that is precisely where the drone helps. Cormorant predation is estimated at close to a third of the sector's turnover; dry years reduce the number of ponds fished regularly. Three missions recur:
- Monitoring water surfaces and levels across a chain of ponds through dated orthophotos: year after year, this objectifies the effect of a filling deficit on the workable area, and feeds a case to an insurer or a funder.
- Spotting algal growth and vegetation belts before draining. A review by C. Kislik, I. Dronova and M. Kelly published in 2018 in Drones takes stock of drone use in algal bloom research: it recalls that satellite imagery remains suited to large expanses, while drones deliver the spatial resolution and revisit frequency that small water bodies require — a fairly precise description of a Brenne pond (see the study on Google Scholar).
- Condition of dykes, monk outlets and fishing bays, the drainage structures without which a pond cannot be worked. A photogrammetric survey ahead of a works campaign avoids discovering a leaking dyke at the moment of refilling.

Champagne Berrichonne and Boischaut: arable on one side, hedgerows and sheep on the other
Farming in the Indre plays out in two opposite registers, and the drone brings something entirely different to each. The département's utilised agricultural area reaches 440,679 hectares, of which 110,013 hectares in the Champagne Berrichonne alone — about a quarter. The 2020 agricultural census counted 3,738 farms in the département, averaging 120 hectares, up 29% in ten years, and as much as 140 hectares in the Champagne Berrichonne.
On this limestone wheat-and-barley plateau, conditions for aerial mapping are as favourable as they get: large, regular fields, no hedges, no relief, and farms too big to walk in a day. One local point deserves stating: the Champagne Berrichonne is also where the département's wind fleet is concentrated, and an agricultural flight plan has to account for the masts, their access tracks and their crane pads.
The Boischaut, to the south and north-west, tells the opposite story: hedgerows, fragmented plots, livestock. Indre is the leading Centre-Val de Loire département for sheep production, in a region with 179,397 sheep across 1,342 holdings concentrated in the Indre and the Cher — but the départemental flock fell by 38% over the period studied by the agricultural services, which makes every animal and every hectare of grassland that much more strategic.
Here the thermal drone serves to count and locate a flock scattered across hedged fields where ground-level sight stops at the first hedge. Feasibility is established: a paper by F. Sarwar, A. Griffin and colleagues presented in 2018 at the 15th IEEE AVSS conference (Auckland) showed that a convolutional neural network applied to drone imagery detects and counts sheep in a paddock, with the explicit aim of giving the farmer a reliable head count per paddock without gathering the flock (see the study on Google Scholar). In practice you fly early in the morning, when the thermal contrast between animal and ground is greatest, and deliver a located count per paddock — the method is detailed in our guide to livestock counting and monitoring by thermal drone. Two caveats: animals react to noise, which dictates a cautious flight height and track; and an aerial count carries no individual identification value — it does not replace the holding register.
Châteauroux industry, wind power and heritage: the other seams of work
Industry in the 36 is denser than people assume, and it is aeronautical. The département's leading private employer is Safran Seats, at Issoudun, which designs and manufactures seats for passengers and crews and brings together on site innovation, engineering, production, assembly, after-sales and support; the company has tightened its local footprint from nine sites to five. Around it, industrial rankings list Sogefi Air & Cooling and Area Franceram at Châteauroux, Indraero Siren at Le Péchereau, and two emblems of local craft: Balsan, heir to the Royal Manufactory of Châteauroux, whose Arthon plant opened in 1973 and offers 45,000 m² of workshop for around 290 employees in total and 10 million m² of carpet a year, 45% of it exported to 75 countries; and the Châteauroux site where Pyrex has been made since 1970, now operated by La Maison française du verre. East of the conurbation, the Ozans business park at Étrechet is developing 137.5 hectares within an overall scheme of about 467 hectares, certified as a "turnkey site", with 30 MW of electrical capacity available and an announced potential of 200 MW: it is the département's main source of industrial construction monitoring for the years ahead, as described in our guide to construction progress monitoring by drone.
Wind power is a measurable reality here, and a politically tense one. According to prefecture figures relayed by the regional press, the département has 173 consented masts across some thirty communes and 314 MW in service, heavily concentrated around Issoudun — roughly two thirds of the fleet, the first consents dating from 2006. About 150 turbines have been refused, and the departmental council has voted a moratorium on new installations: as early as 2018 the prefecture rejected an eight-machine scheme at Giroux and Luçay-le-Libre on landscape saturation grounds, with more than 160 turbines already recorded within a twenty-kilometre radius. Heritage, finally, is scattered and under-documented. The George Sand estate at Nohant, listed as a historic monument by order of 22 December 1952, bequeathed to the State in 1961 and managed by the Centre des monuments nationaux, combines the writer's house with a six-hectare garden. Fontgombault Abbey, founded in 1091, dissolved in 1791 and refounded in 1948, is a working Benedictine monastery, listed since 1862: as a living community it demands strict prior framing, well beyond the airspace question alone. Argenton-sur-Creuse, the "Venice of the Berry", lines its gallery houses above the river and continues the Gallo-Roman town of Argentomagus, whose archaeological site and museum stand at Saint-Marcel. Method, flight framework and prices observed in 2026
A mission in the Indre always follows the same sequence. Zone analysis at the exact address: position relative to the Châteauroux-Déols CTR and its activation hours, presence of a Ramsar or Natura 2000 designation or of the Chérine reserve, built-up areas, temporary restrictions published by NOTAM. Choice of regulatory framework: most agricultural, industrial or wind-farm flights in rural areas fall under the open category, while a flight inside the CTR, over public space in Châteauroux or close to uninvolved people falls under a stricter framework. Preparation with the site: protocol with the airport operator, written consent from the pond owner or the farmer, the manager's agreement for a monument, prevention plan and badges on an industrial site. Then flight, processing and delivery. The regulatory information on this page reflects the rules in force in September 2026; temporary restrictions are re-checked the day before the flight.

Three limits to keep in mind in this département in particular. Administrative lead time is a cost item in its own right here: between the weekday-active CTR and the Brenne's protection designations, a mission that would be prepared in 48 hours elsewhere often takes one to three weeks in the 36. Distances weigh: 32 inhabitants per square kilometre means travel, hence a real interest in grouping several sites for the same client on a single day. And the drone replaces neither the chartered surveyor for a legally binding survey, nor water analysis for a pond, nor the close-up examination by a maintenance technician or heritage architect: it guides, documents and date-stamps, it does not certify. Frequently asked questions
Can you fly a drone over the Brenne ponds?
Not freely, and not simply by checking the aeronautical map. The Brenne stacks three independent layers: the Ramsar site designated in 1991, covering 140,000 hectares; the overlapping Natura 2000 designations; and the Chérine national nature reserve, whose protection decree applies to overflight. Three practical points. First, most ponds are private property: taking off from a dyke or flying over a chain of ponds requires the owner's written consent, quite apart from any airspace question. Second, a nature reserve's rules may ban low-level overflight: you read them before the flight, not after. Third, a survey or monitoring mission on a Natura 2000 site is arranged with the site manager and avoids nesting periods — the whole point being not to disturb what you came to document. Do you need authorisation to fly in Châteauroux because of the airport?
Yes, as soon as the flight falls inside the Châteauroux-Déols control zone (CTR), which runs from the surface up to 2,500 feet (762 metres) and covers a large part of the built-up area. It is active on weekdays during published time bands — in practice Monday to Friday, morning and afternoon. Two concrete consequences. First: inside the CTR, a professional flight is arranged through a protocol with the aerodrome operator and the air navigation service, with maximum heights and sometimes imposed slots; that is the process described in our guide to drone missions in an aerodrome control zone. Second: the CTR not being active at a given moment removes neither the zone analysis, nor the built-up area rules, nor the check of temporary restrictions published by NOTAM. Build that administrative lead time into your schedule, not into the day before.
Is the former La Martinerie military camp still off limits to drones?
It is no longer a military site. Created on 25 October 1915 across roughly 300 hectares straddling Déols, Diors and Étrechet, four kilometres east of Châteauroux, the site saw the 517th Train Regiment leave on 23 May 2012, ending a century of military presence. Part of the former NATO supply depot warehouses has in fact housed an industrial estate since 1 June 1968. Beware of two reflexes, though: "former camp" does not mean "free ground". The land belongs to identified owners — the local authority, the businesses established there — whose consent governs take-off and close overflight; and the sector still has to be checked against the neighbouring airport's control zone before any flight. A mission over former military brownfield is therefore prepared like an industrial site mission, with owner, access and zone analysis.
